Florence could then move slowly along the North Carolina and SC line then possibly move down the SC coast before actually making landfall later this weekend.

"Hurricane and storm surge watches now blanket much of the SC and North Carolina coasts, and enormous rainfall totals could be in store for coastal areas as well as inland".

Hurricane Florence kept everyone on edge Wednesday, when the storm began sliding southward and taking aim at the Georgia coast.

"We are already experiencing heavily impacted traffic on some of the evacuation routes", said Jeff Byard, the associate administrator for response and recovery at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Hurricane Florence is being called a "monster" storm, and the warnings have been dire.

People fleeing coastal North and SC clogged highways early Wednesday as Florence bore down on the coast for a direct hit in a low-lying region dense with beachfront vacation homes. "We're kind of at the mercy of the storm".

Life-threatening storm surges of up to 13 feet (3.9 meters) were also forecast in some areas of North Carolina along with the possibility of tornadoes. Cars and trucks full of people and belongings streamed inland. Rising water levels could leave coastal parts of North Carolina under 9 feet of water, the National Hurricane Center's director, Ken Graham, told CBS News on Tuesday.

Wilmington, just north of where Florence appeared headed for shore, grew empty and quiet on Wednesday.

Hurricane-force winds now extend up to 80 miles from the eye of the storm, and tropical-storm-force winds now extend up to 195 miles from the center of the storm.

This water is more deadly than wind or debris.

Barish writes that overall, casual dining restaurants are more likely to take a hit from Florence than quick-serve restaurants, but restaurants in general could get a bit of a boost on a same-store-sales basis.

"The biggest thing is you're always anxious about yourself and friends and family - and whether they'll have a place to come back to", he said.
