Many of the Bon-Ton chains had roots in the Midwest. The relaunched company would be focused on online commerce, but also would include some physical locations.

Services like personal styling will be offered, and stores will be open for a shorter time most week days, and for extended hours from Thursday to Sunday.

There have been no announcements from Bon-Ton or its creditors about the message on the websites. Herberger's got its start in Osakis, Minn., Younkers in Keokuk, Iowa, Carson's in Peru, Ill.

All of the remaining stores owned by Bon-Ton closed in recent months.

The company for about a year had been trying to sell itself but without success. We can not speak to the purchaser's future plans with the company.

The Holland Younkers, an anchor location in struggling The Shops at Westshore, was almost empty as the store wrapped up its last day of business on Wednesday, Aug. 29. But it stumbled in a new era in which consumers are used to fast fashion and door step delivery from Amazon and other retailers.

Bon-Ton filed for bankruptcy February 4, and was unable to find an investor willing to keep the company going.
