In win for BDS 2 performers pull out of Israeli music festival

American singer/songwriter Lana Del Rey has cancelled her concert at a festival in Tel Aviv, Israel on Friday, one week before the planned show.

South Africa's Black Motion band announced their decision to drop from the September festival last Wednesday after Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) South Africa reached out to the pair of musicians asking them to abstain from participating in the upcoming festival. Some, such as Lorde, have canceled their shows, while others such as Nick Cave and Radiohead have resisted the calls of boycott.

Del Rey was to headline the inaugural Meteor Festival in northern Israel next week.

Del Rey has cancelled an Israel show in the past: in 2014, she called off a performance in the country after conflict between Gaza and Israel intensified. A Palestinian BDS movement Twitter account sent out a message of appreciation for Del Rey's decision.

U2 concert ends early after Bono loses voice
The Irish rockers were playing in Berlin , Germany, on Saturday but had to stop after only a few songs as Bono struggled on stage. Comparing the stage smoke with that of a cigar he asked for it to be turned off, saying, "I need flawless conditions to sing".

She said: 'It's important to me to perform in both Palestine and Israel and treat all my fans equally ... therefore, I'm postponing my appearance at the Meteor Festival'.

"I would like to remind you that performing in Tel Aviv is not a political statement or a commitment to the politics there", she wrote in an earlier statement. In an Instagram post, she said that she wanted peace for both countries. The campaign includes academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, which means that any event attended by an Israeli scholar or artist is to be ignored or even obstructed.

Proponents of the cultural boycott against Israel argue that it serves as a reminder to Israelis of their government's mistreatment of Palestinians, and that it pressures Israel to reconsider policies that infringe on Palestinian rights, including the occupation.

Meteor Festival issued a statement on its website shortly after, accusing the singer of wanting to "score some press attention". The three-day festival is set to host over 50 worldwide acts including Pusha T, ASAP Ferg, and Flying Lotus, alongside local artists.
