'Monster' Hurricane Florence Barrels Toward the Carolinas

A satellite image shows Hurricane Florence looming in the Atlantic Ocean as the sun rises over the U.S. Florence is expected to bring tropical storm conditions to North Carolina and SC on Thursday and hurricane conditions on Friday.

New projections indicate the now-Category 3 hurricane will move slightly southeast, with landfall expected between Wilmington and Morehead City, North Carolina.

"Get out of its way, don't play games with it, it's a big one, maybe as big as they've seen", Trump said. The power is going to be off for weeks. Broadline and discount retailers including Walmart(WMT) and Dollar General(DG) could see modest boosts to comparable sales, as last year's storms added at least 0.30 percentage point to Dollar General's and Walmart's US same-store sales. Upon its arrival, the National Hurricane Center projects that Florence could drop anywhere from 20-40 inches of rain along the Carolina coast.

But despite the potentially devastating hurricane, forecast to make landfall on Friday with 130mph winds, people tried to offer some "relief" in the silence before the storm.

The approach of Florence has seen panic-buying at petrol stations in North Carolina.

"I notified every public agency in Coweta County, mainly putting people on alert and telling them to gear up, get what they need, check staff levels and bolster them, if need be", he said.

If you're not under evacuation orders, Ready.gov recommends having at least three days' worth of food, water, medications and emergency supplies for people and pets. Schools in 26 of the state's 46 counties were ordered closed. The Category 4 storm is likely to produce "catastrophic" flooding in the eastern Carolinas, as well as destructive winds.

The slow movement, combined with the massive amount of moisture this storm holds, will bring unsafe rains - from 20 to 30 inches in coastal North Carolina, with 40 inches possible in isolated areas, the weather service says.

Some 7,000 guard members are ready to mobilize in North Carolina, while 1,100 will be activated in SC.

Florence is so wide that a life-threatening storm surge was being pushed 300 miles (485 kilometers) ahead of its eye, and so wet that a swath from SC to OH and Pennsylvania could get deluged.
