Some of the first passengers to enter the newly-opened WTC Cortlandt subway station

A New York City subway station has reopened for the first time since it was destroyed 17 years ago in the 11 September 2001 terrorist attack.

"WTC Cortlandt is more than a new subway station".

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs the city's subway system, unveiled the reconstructed station on Saturday, just three days before the anniversary of the attack.

The story of the WTC Cortlandt echoes the development of the new World Trade Center itself, which underwent years of design, budget, and security disputes before construction even began.

Cortlandt Street on the 1 line was buried under debris when the two World Trade Center towers collapsed after hijackers crashed planes into them.

Serena fined $17000 after US Open final outburst
The furore over the final of the US Open is continuing after it was on Sunday revealed that Serena Williams had been fined $17,000 for code violations during the game which saw her lose her bid to equal the record for a 24th major title.

The new station also has fewer columns, which allows for more space on both platforms - a move meant to ease navigation for customers with wheel chairs.

The station, which serves the No. 1 train, has fewer columns along the platforms for increased maneuverability, and also features a wall showcasing text from the 1776 Declaration of Independence and the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

This $181 million upgrade is now fully accessible to the public.

"The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs the subway system, only began to build the new station in 2015 after the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey handed over control of the site after finishing other parts of the area", the newspaper said.
