The Asian Network for Free Elections said the political environment in the tourist paradise was heavily tipped in favour of President Abdulla Yameen and they did not expect a fair contest

With flags raised high and dancing on the streets, Maldives cheers for its new President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who defeated Abdulla Yameen in the 2018 presidential election to claim the title.

The country's Elections Commission said Solih won by a margin of 16.7 percent in Sunday's vote. Results from yesterday's election released by the electoral commission showed Mr Yameen on 41.7 per cent, well behind Mr Solih, the only other candidate, on 58.3 per cent.

"The message is loud and clear".

India unusually issued the statement about three hours before the official results were declared by the Maldives's Election Commission and congratulated Solih - a signal to President Yameen to not attempt to overturn the results. Earlier today, I met with Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who the Maldivian electorate has chosen to be their next president.

"In the face of massive pressure, they had to abandon their plans", Rohana Hettiarachchi of the Asian Network for Free Elections told AFP.

The Yameen administration was widely criticised for systematically suppressing opposition, rolling back democratic freedoms, jailing rivals and controlling courts.

"The will of the people has spoken", said Solih.

But outside the main opposition campaign centre in Male, hundreds of people gathered overnight to celebrate, chanting "Ibu, Ibu, Ibu".

According to reports, Solih won the presidential election, defeating President Abdulla Yameen who is known to be close to China.

The European Union and USA have voiced concerns about the election and have threatened to impose targeted sanctions if the democratic situation does not improve.

That equates to an increase of about 1 million bpd, but the latest figures show they are some way from achieving that target. The market was "increasingly concerned about dwindling (U.S.) inventories", ANZ bank said on Monday.

Voting began on Sunday, September 23, in the Maldives for the presidential polls amid political turmoil and fears of vote rigging.

The archipelago has been gripped by political upheaval in recent years. Meanwhile, the relationship between India and Maldives have been under strain. His octagenarian half-brother Mr. Gayoom is also in prison.

Many in the Maldives and elsewhere are wary of China's increasing military interests.

Under Mr Yameen, the Maldives has also welcomed Chinese money for major projects and signed a free trade agreement.

Some 2,62,000 people in the archipelago - famed for its white beaches and blue lagoons - were eligible to vote in an election from which independent worldwide monitors have been barred.

"I have congratulated him", he said.

Was it a fair election?

Independent worldwide monitors were barred from the election and only a handful of foreign media were allowed in to cover the poll.

Although the Maldivian government said global journalists were welcome to report on elections, many - including from The New York Times - were unable to secure visas to enter the country. On the eve of polling day, the Maldivian Police searched the MDP's office premises. He said police would share details of the raid after it was over.

Mr Yameen has shrugged off accusations of authoritarianism, saying during the campaign: "No-one will come to greet me and shake my hand, if there is tyranny".
