Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Centre's flagship Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission (AB-NHPM) on Sunday in Ranchi, Jharkhand. Over 10.74 crore vulnerable entitled families (approximately 50 crore beneficiaries) will be eligible for these benefits.

Ayushman Bharat, dubbed as the world's largest government-funded healthcare scheme, is expected to benefit 50 crore citizens.

Asked about the cost to the exchequer in the current fiscal, he said, "Around Rs 3,500 crore has been budgeted by the central government for the scheme this year".

"If you combine the population of the US, Mexico and Canada on one side, and the beneficiaries of Aayushman Bharat Scheme, the two figures would be near equal", he said.

The Health Ministry has included 1,354 packages in the scheme under which treatment for coronary bypass, knee replacements and stenting, among others, would be provided at 15-20 per cent cheaper rates than the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS).

Promoted as "Modicare" - on the lines of former United States president Barack Obama's "Obamacare" healthcare programme - the scheme is expected to be a gamechanger for the government in run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. "Even the ones living in the lowest strata of the society will benefit from the scheme", he said. He said the poor are at the centre of the Modi government's projects, which has also launched a scheme to provide them homes besides offering other facilities.
