Royal Mail tells environmental campaigners to stop posting crisp packets without envelopes

Instructions from 38 Degrees

A petition circulated by 38 Degrees calling on Walkers to move up the timetable of the packaging plans has garnered over 5,000 signatures.

Royal Mail states that because the crisp packets aren't packaged properly, they can't go through their automated sorting machines and need to be done by hand, which in turn causes delays.

Protesters have been mailing empty packets of crisps back to Walkers - but Royal Mail have issued a reminder to use envelopes.

.

It won't make such a pretty photo to share on social media, though, plus protesting might be less thrilling when you have to loot the house trying to find an envelope.

According to the Mirror, customers have been told to "flood Walkers social media with pictures of us popping them in the post", along with the hashtag #PacketinWalkers.

Walkers has pledged to make all its packaging 100% recyclable, compostable or biodegradable by 2025.

The petition claims that "the United Kingdom alone consumes approximately 6bn packets a year". Imagine during that time the effect on wildlife and the environment.

"Walkers produce a staggering 7,000 plastic crisp packets a minute which they don't pay a penny to clean up".

Distracted Boyfriend meme is sexist, rules Swedish ad watchdog
This is the typical use of the meme-not to use it as a vehicle to objectify women, but to illustrate other abstract ideas. The Swedish ad watchdog is self-regulatory, meaning it can't legally force the company to take down the posts.

Crisp makers Walkers have been flooded with empty packets that have been sent with their freepost address simply placed directly on them.

This isn't the first time crisp producers have tried to deal with the issue, PepsiCo trialed several biodegradable bags in the U.S. in 2009 but remarkably were abandoned in 2010 when customers complained they were too noisy.

Yet despite this, the campaign by 38 degrees has managed to put crisp packets at the forefront of the issues surrounding single use plastics by environmentalists.

People have been mailing their empty chip bags back to Walkers in recent weeks to protest the company's packaging, which takes 75-80 years to decompose.

Walkers said: "We recognise the efforts being made to bring the issue of packaging waste to our attention. We don't have all the answers yet, which is why we're collaborating with a number of leaders in this area to learn and share the latest science and practical solutions".

However, while Royal Mail is obliged by law to deliver the bags to Walkers' freepost address, without envelopes the crisp packets can not go through machines and need to be processed by hand, potentially causing delays in the delivery rooms of Royal Mail.

Royal Mail said it had handled about 30 crisp packets so far.
