Smart won’t live in fear after kidnapper release

It's a story that made national headlines when it first happened and when Elizabeth Smart was rescued, but even 16 years later, the details remain just as horrifying.

Wanda Barzee, the woman convicted of helping a former street preacher kidnap Elizabeth Smart as a teenager from her Salt Lake City bedroom in 2002 and holding her captive, in an April 8, 2016, file photo.

This appearance also comes on the day Barzee was released from prison despite pleas from Smart to keep her behind bars for several more years.

We've compiled a list of 10 things to know, to catch yourself up with the case and review where it stands today.

When Barzee was sentenced 15 years ago, she had to write a letter of apology to Smart.

"I do believe that he will do the job to the best of his ability". Does credit for time served always make sense, especially in a situation such as this?

Barzee will be under federal supervision for five years.

Although she has concerns about her own safety, her family and the public in general, Smart said she has been told who will be Barzee's federal probation officer, and has faith in that person. But last week, the board announced that it had erred in calculating the length of the sentence handed down to Barzee by not counting the years she was in the Utah State Hospital, and by not making her state prison time concurrent to her federal prison sentence. On Sept. 11, the parole board said she had completed both sentences.

The online registry shows Wanda Barzee's conviction on federal and state charges in the 2002 kidnapping of then 14-year-old Smart. "Therefore Ms. Barzee's state sentence ends on September 19, 2018".

Chelsea boss Sarri: Players adjusted quicker here than Napoli
The 24-year-old added: 'That is the problem in my career, I have not scored enough - and it's something I need to improve on'. I didn't know he's so good. "Here at the moment I am very happy with the situation, with the players, with the club.

Barzee could be returned to prison if she violates the terms of her release.

"I'm not going to let these people, this woman, stop me from living the life I want to live", Smart said in a speech on Wednesday night at Lock Haven University, without mentioning Barzee by name. "She would sit right next to me. Like, the side of her body would be touching me".

"And then all of a sudden, this man's in my room with a knife at my neck telling me to get up and go with him", said Smart.

"I just can't imagine how she must be feeling right now, it's insane", said Lock Haven freshman McCartney Register. "It just was dark and it was evil", Smart told Gayle King.

"I don't know. And perhaps that's what worries me, because I know just how bad she can be", she said.

Barzee's niece Tina Mace has said her aunt's testimony against Mitchell seemed like a turning point, but her mental state appears to have changed in prison.

"And I remember - remember when they used to force me to - to drink alcohol", she said to CBS. "And they have been very good, and I'm hoping that's the way it will work", he said.

The 72-year-old was previously scheduled to be released in 2024. Family means a lot to me.
