ASHLEIGH Barty has overcome a freaky mid-match stoppage to advance to the third round of the US Open for the second straight year.

Two leading Ukrainian tennis players, world No.7 Elina Svitolina and No.36 Lesia Tsurenko, continue on in the U.S. Open tournament. But who will come out on top?

However, the 10-minute heat break between the second and third sets proved a timely boost. And after the fifth game Kalinina was leading 4:1.

In such a time as this, Stephens will have the opportunity to make her name into the tennis scene in this new era.

This was the first meeting for the two regulars on the WTA tour and one that they both wished to put behind them.

Stephens, who arrived in NY after a mixed start to her hard court swing, began her title-defence against Russia's Evgeniya Rodina, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, upsetting Madison Keys en route.

United Nations ‘alarmed’ by studies of China’s mass detention of Uighurs
In the past, China has rejected allegations of subjecting Uighurs to torture and discrimination in Xinjiang. The U.S. lawmakers' letter called for "a tough, targeted, and global response ".

Elder sibling Venus, who defeated Serena at Indian Wells earlier this year, may have the chance to close the gap after beating Giorgi 6-4 7-5.

MATCH POINT: For fans interested in players' mid-match snack choices, Stephens admitted that during the 10-minute heat break before the third set, she ate two pieces of sushi and drank a slushy before returning to the court and closing out the match.

Barty's cunning court craft and clutch serve was too much for Lucie Safarova, Australia's top-ranked player taking out the former French Open finalist 7-5 6-3 under lights on Show Court 17 at Flushing Meadows. Gavrilova was unable to back up her 6-0 6-0 first-round win over Sara Sorribes Tormo, the 25th seed falling 6-1 6-2 to former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka.

How do they match up?

Defending champions Rafael Nadal and Sloane Stephens also are in action, along with past champions Juan Martin del Potro and Andy Murray - who could meet in the third round.

Bhambri, who is world No. 96, lost 3-6, 6-7 (3-7), 5-7 to Herbert in a match that lasted almost two and half hours. The former-world #1 has always been amongst the best returners in the game and she will look to take advantage of any second serves to assert herself in the point.
