Violence forces Libya to declare state of emergency in Tripoli

Libya 400 prisoners break out of Tripoli jail as fighting between armed militias intensifies

Armed groups have been fighting for control of the Libyan capital since the regime of dictator Moammar Gadhafi was toppled in 2011.

Separately, a missile fell on Sunday on the al-Fallah camp for displaced Tawergha people, killing two and wounding seven, including two children, said Emad Ergeha, an activist following Tawergha issues.

The GNA's health ministry said on Friday that at least 39 people had been killed, including a Malian national who was killed by shelling on his home.

Police said that rioting broke out in the Ain Zara prison, near the area where government forces were being attacked by the rival militia, known as the Seventh Brigade.

The jailbreak comes as fighting between rival militias has left dozens of people dead, with the UN-backed government declaring a state of emergency in and around the Libyan capital.

Guards were unable to prevent the prisoners from escaping as they feared for their own lives, the statement said.

Trump escalates attacks on his attorney general
Mr Trump's attack on Mr Sessions was quickly followed by a post in which he mocked the former U.S. secretary of state John Kerry . Trump recently told Bloomberg News that he would keep Sessions as attorney general until after the midterm elections.

The government declared a state of emergency in and around Tripoli, saying the fighting is "an attempt to derail peaceful political transition" in the country.

The country is now governed by two rival authorities backed by an array of powerful armed groups: the Tripoli-based GNA, which is recognised by the United Nations as Libya's official government; and the Tobruk-based House of Representatives in the east of the country, which has the support of renegade General Khalifa Haftar.

The inmates included many supporters of the country's late leader Muammar Gaddafi, who was found guilty of killings during a 2011 uprising in the country. We call on all actors to refrain from any action that would jeopardize the political framework established by the UN-led mediation to which the worldwide community is fully committed.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said the "indiscriminate use of force is a violation of worldwide humanitarian and human rights law" and has urged "all parties to grant humanitarian relief for those in need".

On Saturday, Britain, France, Italy and the United States said in a joint statement that an escalation would hamper the political process in Libya and plans to hold nationwide elections by December.
