Apple announces New MacBook Air: smaller bezels, smarter, faster, lighter

There's no Touch Bar on the new MacBook Air, but there is Touch ID functionality for signing into the laptop more quickly.

Apple has launched a new updated MacBook Air, almost 3 years after it last updated the laptop, that has a Retina Display and TouchID.

Meanwhile, Apple's new MacBook Air features a 13.3-inch Retina Display and comes with Touch ID support.

The new MacBook Air also comes with Touch ID, secured by Apple's T2 security chip, letting you unlock your device and authenticate on apps using your fingerprint. The lowest-end MacBook Air features a 1.6Ghz dual-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 CPU with Turbo Boost up to 3.6Ghz, 8GB of LPDDR3 RAM, 128GB of SSD Storage and an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 617 card.

The new MacBook Air maintains its classic tapered aluminum design, but now includes two Thunderbolt 3 ports along the left edge and a headphone jack on the right. The all-new MacBook Air is also just 15.6mm-thick, which makes it 10 percent thinner than the previous Air. Indeed the new MacBook Air takes the slender dimensions of its predecessor and narrows them even further. The new MacBook Air launches on November 7.

The revamp of the some of the most popular products in the Mac line comes on the heels of new devices from Alphabet Inc.'s Google and Microsoft Corp. The new machine sports a 12 hour battery life for web browsing, and 13 hours for watching video.

The latter is used on phones like the original Google Pixel and Essential phones, helping stabilize video (but not photos). Smaller pixels, of course, means worse image quality, but this solution is still viable for secondary or auxiliary cameras.

KitGuru Says: Its nice to see that Apple hasn't forgotten about, or made a decision to axe the Mac Mini and MacBook Air. The FaceTime camera will remain at the top of the display, however.

What is the MacBook Air?

Lastly, the new MacBook Air is constructed from 100-percent recycled aluminium.

The revived Air also has a 13.3-inch display, but with higher Retina-grade density. Additionally, the Air is equipped with the same keyboard and Force Touch trackpad found on Apple's latest MacBook Pro models, along with louder speakers boasting 25 percent more volume and bass. We'll keep you updated on the latest. The screen on the new MacBook Air has four times resolution with four million pixels to offer more detail and 48 per cent more colour reproduction. This base configuration starts at $1,199, which makes this model the cheapest, until you start adding more to the configuration.

So here's the New MacBook Air, a completely redesigned, reengineered, and carefully refined upgrade over the predecessor. MacBook batteries tend to perform very well, but we'll still need to get our hands on it to properly test that statement out for ourselves.

All told, it's a better design in terms of portability, but it doesn't leave much room for power similar to that of what the MacBook Air held against contemporaries of the time.
