"Synthetic sweeteners raise more and more doubts due to their controversial health effects of consumers".

Researchers found six sweeteners (advantame, saccharine, aspartame, sucralose, neotame, and acesulfame potassium-k)- all approved for use in foods and drinks in the U.S. and European Union - to be toxic to gut microbes.

The researchers examined six sweeteners: aspartame (E951), Sucralose (Е955), saccharin (E954), neotame (Е961), Advanta (E969) and Acesulfame (E950), and 10 sports supplements that contain these sweeteners.

FDA-approved artificial sweeteners and sport supplements were found to be toxic to digestive gut microbes. It only takes 1mg/ml for the substance to adversely affect gut bacteria.

Canada won't appeal court ruling that nixed pipeline approval
The Trans Mountain expansion would triple capacity of the existing pipeline between Edmonton and Burnaby, B.C. Saganash asked in question period Wednesday.

In a statement, the International Sweeteners Association (ISA) asserted that a strong body of well-designed and robust studies conducted in vivo in animals and humans confirmed the safety of low calorie sweeteners.

Apart from their adverse effects on human health, artificial sweeteners have been identified as environmental pollutants, and can be found in drinking and surface water, and groundwater aquifers, because these sweeteners are resistant to wastewater treatment processes.

"The results of this study might help in understanding the relative toxicity of artificial sweeteners and the potential of negative effects on the gut microbial community as well as the environment", stated Ariel Kushmaro, of National Institute for Biotechnology in Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and one of the experts involved in the study. "Furthermore, the tested bioluminescent bacterial panel can potentially be used for detecting artificial sweeteners in the environment".

This may lead to bigger issues as the use of artificial sweeteners in drinks and foods are becoming widespread with many people continuing to consume it, without quite knowing it.
