Chinese City Wants to Launch Artificial Moon

If Chengdu can get approval for the artificial moon and actually launch it in space in the next couple of years, the city is hopeful it'll help it save money on illuminating its streets.

With an ultra-bright full moon each and every night, the city would then be in for serious savings on their monthly electric bills, or at least that appears to be the rationale for the ambitious project.

The idea is the brainchild of Wu Chunfeng, chairman of Chengdu Aerospace Science and Technology Microelectronics System Research Institute.

Wu reportedly said testing had begun on the satellite years ago and the technology had now evolved enough to allow for launch in 2020. (Casc). He spoke about the plan at an event last week.

MLB Clears Astros of Any Wrongdoing in Sign-Stealing Scandal
The incident isn't expected to amount to anything more than a fine for Houston , according to a report from ESPN . It's still fishy and the league told the Astros not to do that anymore and report it to the proper authorities.

Chengdu, the capital of the Sichuan province, has proposed a plan to launch an artificial moon, or illumination satellite, into space, Asia Times is reporting.

The "dusk-like glow" of the satellite would be able to light an area with a diameter of between 10 and 80km (six to 50 miles), while the precise illumination range could be controlled within tens of metres - enabling it to replace street lights. The People's Daily also clarified that the satellite created to complement the natural moonlight, describing it as "similar to a dusk-like glow".

It's unclear whether Beijing approves of Chengdu's plans to put an extra moon into orbit, but Casc is a leading contractor for China's space program, according to The Guardian.

Of course, artificial lighting is already a contentious issue - potential annoyances at the loss of a night sky aside, these lights have the potential to negatively impact human health, animal routines, and make life harder for astronomers. The artist imagined a mirrored necklace around the Earth to reflect sunlight onto Paris year-round.
