Study 1 in 3 U.S. adults eat fast food each day

But in the US, it's something adults just can't seem to live without.

But despite public health campaigns, new figures released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that 37 percent of U.S. adults are not taking the message to heart. While about 45 percent of people in their 20s and 30s said they'd eaten fast food over the prior day, that number dropped to just under 38 percent for people in their 40s and 50s, and about 24 percent for people aged 60 and older, the study found. The CDC didn't say whether the consumption figure has risen or declined since 2016. "Fast food has been associated with poor diet and increased risk of obesity".

Weinandy said while it's not realistic to tell people not to eat fast food, she would like to see healthier options.

In addition to analyzing the entire US adult population, the CDC found that age is a factor in determining whether people will eat fast food.

For example, while about 32 percent of lower-income folks ate fast food daily, more than 36 percent of middle-income consumers had fast food on a given day, as did 42 percent of those with higher incomes, the report found.

She adds that it's also up to primary care physicians to talk their patients about the dangers of eating too much fast food.

When it came to gender, men were most likely to buy fast food for lunch, while women would purchase it as a quick and low-priced snack.

The note could bolster growing scrutiny around the Supreme Court nominee's testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee last week. Chad Ludington, his former classmate from Yale, disputed that description to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Monday.

The report also found that a higher percentage of non-Hispanic black adults - 42.4% - said they consumed fast food than non-Hispanic white adults at 37.6%, non-Hispanic Asian adults at 30.6% and Hispanic adults at 35.5%.

"On average, they'd gone 2½ - actually 2.4 - times per week".

"There is no reason to completely avoid fast food, but it shouldn't be consumed regularly", she said. A previous report estimated that adults consumed 11.3 per cent of their total daily calories from fast food. "So those numbers are pretty comparable to about a third on any given day", Harris said. "So all of those are driving purchases of fast food", Harris said. That's because it "has been associated with increased intake of calories, fat and sodium", the CDC team said.

Liz Weinandy, a registered dietitian at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, conceded that it's unsurprising that younger people eat the most fast food, but she said the rates are very concerning.

'We know that people who are overweight or obese are more likely to be eating fast foods, but people really listen to their doctors, ' Weinandy said. But "what we should be scared of is double cheeseburgers, french fries and large amounts of sugary beverages".

'We have got an overabundance of highly processed foods that are very cheap and very easily available, ' she said. "It takes time and some organization".
