Medical director for preventive care at Kaiser Permanente Dr. John Dunn said people should consider getting a flu shot before cases spike this year.

But, that was nearly 100 years ago!

This year, the government is doing something a bit different than years past and will be offering every Ontario resident six months of age and older, including pregnant women, a quadrivalent flu vaccine which is broad protection. Although 90 percent of last year's flu victims were over the age of 65, the sickness still managed to kill 180 children and teenagers, which is still a record high count according to the Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention (CDC).

Shah said people should receive their flu shots before the end of October.

So at these meetings, the researchers who have their lights on in their laboratories at night are here telling us about new technologies that are designed to create better vaccines for the future. Remember that the immune system of young children is not as developed as adults and this alone places them at greater risk.

A nurse administers a flu shot at Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton, Illinois, on October 12, 2017. It is not possible to predict the severity and exact strains of the flu that will affect each season, but another equally high-risk season is always feasible.

However, May has not yet shown the new proposal to Foster, whose party the prime minister depends upon for her Commons majority. That's certainly not where I want to be.

In terms of effectiveness, Munoz concedes that the flu vaccine isn't ideal.

For those concerned about safety or side effects, Munoz assures them flu vaccines are tested extensively for safety and produced under "very high standards".

This year, the vaccine is equipped with the capability of handling the most common strains of both influenza "A" and "B" which are prevalent. Anyone who feels like they are experiencing flu-like symptoms, such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue, and sometimes diarrhea and vomiting, are encouraged to contact their doctor's office or seek medical attention. As for the risk of allergic reaction, the odds of experiencing a severe allergic reaction are less than 1 in 4 million.

Flu is a highly infectious disease and can lead to serious complications if you have an underlying health condition such as COPD, bronchitis, emphysema, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease or a chronic neurological disease like multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy. When a virus invades the body it must be able to reproduce in order to infect a person. A dead virus can not reproduce and therefore can not infect a person. You can not get the flu from the flu shot, and we say this over and over again.

How does the vaccine work, exactly?

Be sure to get your vaccine ASAP so you can have the best chance of flu-free this winter. Last winter, the US vaccine was only 25 percent effective against the unexpected emergence of the H3N2 strain, or 36 percent effective overall, according to the CDC.

And they are encouraging patients to check whether they are also eligible to have a flu vaccination to protect them against catching flu and developing serious complications.
