The chairman of the Nigerian Psychological Association, Federal Capital Territory Chapter, Dr Emmanuel Alhassan, in a statement to mark this year's World Mental Health Day, which comes up tomorrow, October 10th said if mental health issues are tackled as soon as they occur, they may not degenerate to mental illnesses.

First organized by the World Federation for Mental Health in 1992, the event is now held globally and sees thousands of advocates and volunteers engage the public about mental health awareness and the impact of mental illnesses in people's daily lives.

In a new op-ed for the Guardian published on Tuesday, Gaga, along with World Health Organization director general Tedros Adhanom, urged readers to confront the shame and stigma that keeps people from speaking out about mental health.

Dr Kaluwa made the call on Monday at a press launch of the 2018 Mental Health Week, which was organised by the Mental Health Authority (MHA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and WHO, in Accra. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), depression was globally the third-highest disease burden amongst adolescents, and suicide the second leading cause of death in 15- to 29-year-olds, while the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) states that nine percent of teenage deaths in the country were due to suicide. The emotional and social withdrawal associated with mental illness the patient goes through, lead its sufferers to be less likely to reach out to friends and family for help or to accept it.

"With so many of our employees managing mental health conditions, it is our obligation to provide effective intervention and prioritize treating mental health on the same level as physical health", Gorsky said.

"At the centre, many children come in with mood disturbances like depression". Why is it that while most of us feel quite confident talking to family and friends about our physical aches and pains, we are not so comfortable to talk about our mental health?

"It is becoming increasingly obvious that we need to invest in awareness, diagnosis and treatment, very early on, in order to offset the worst consequences of these conditions, whenever possible".
