Missing Saudi journalist's fiancee asks for Trump's help

Khashoggi, an Al Watan and Washington Post journalist known for his strong critiques of authorities in Saudi Arabia and ruling Prince Mohammed bin Salman, had fled his home country a year ago to live in self-imposed exile in the United States.

Turkish police investigating the case said on Saturday that 15 Saudis, including several officials, arrived in Istanbul on two planes and entered the consulate while Khashoggi was inside. "Just met the Saudi ambassador to seek urgent answers over Jamal Khashoggi", U.K. foreign minister Jeremy Hunt said on Twitter.

It would also put Britain directly at odds with the crown prince, who is a key United Kingdom ally. All those issues have been viewed as being pushed by Prince Mohammed, who similarly has led roundups of activists, businessmen and others in the kingdom. The wealthy former government insider had been living in the United States in self-imposed exile.

At the same time, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on Saudi Arabia to prove its claim that Khashoggi left the consulate safely.

Bob Corker, who as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has reviewed US intelligence on the case, said it was likely that Khashoggi was killed the day he walked into the consulate. "As the president of the Turkish Republic I am following it, chasing it and, whatever conclusions come from here, we will inform the world about it", he said. "I don't like hearing about it", Trump told reporters on Monday.

"They must give a transparent explanation very quickly, otherwise the tide will quickly turn against them".

The BBC was criticised on social media for airing the recordings without Mr Khashoggi's consent and before there is any definitive proof of his death.

The Saudis praised "the brotherly Turkish government" for accepting a request to send a "security delegation of Saudi investigators" to assist in the inquiry into Khashoggi's disappearance.

Turkey's Anadolu Agency also reported that the group of Saudis were briefly at the consulate.

The U.S. has been in contact with Turkish officials about the case, Trump said. "We want to see what's going on there", he said. White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders added that the U.S. would continue to inquire about the fate of the journalist.

Cengiz, 36, said she called the consulate to say she was waiting at the entrance and asked: "Where is Jamal?".

"That is effectively terminating consular relations between Saudi Arabia on Turkish territory", Professor Saul said.

Turkish officials allege he was murdered inside the consulate. He wrote columns for the Washington Post and the Guardian.

Cengiz urged Saudi Arabia, "especially King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to show the same level of sensitivity and release CCTV footage from the consulate".

Turkish officials said Mr Khashoggi was killed on the premises and his body was then removed. Saudi Arabia may have agreed to the search in order to reassure its Western allies and the worldwide community.

"The only way to explain the hesitation on the part on Riyadh and Ankara not to quickly announce what they think is happening is because they both fear escalating the situation unnecessarily", said Khalil Jahshan, executive director of Arab Center Washington. These include ending all relationships with Iran and Turkey, ending support for the Muslim Brotherhood, and shutting down al-Jazeera, which has been highly critical of Saudi Arabia - things that are never going to happen.

Vice President Mike Pence echoed the president's remarks and said the worldwide community "deserves answers".

The ultra-conservative kingdom in June lifted a ban on women driving, but it has drawn heavy criticism for its handling of dissent.
