Crashed Lion Air jet flew four times with damaged airspeed gauge

The latest directive follows advisories issued by United States watchdog Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Boeing regarding B 737 MAX planes, following the crash of a Lion Air aircraft in Indonesia last month.

Even if an angle of attack sensor on a jet is faulty, there's generally a backup system in place for the critical component, and pilots are trained to handle a plane safely if those sensors fail, airline safety experts said.

A Boeing Co. warning to 737 Max operators around the globe provides the first clues about how bad data from an airflow sensor might have contributed to the deadly crash of an Indonesian airliner last week.

"We will.conduct a special audit of the crews' qualifications and staff communication", transportation minister Budi Karya Sumadi told reporters Monday as he announced the probe into Lion's operations.

The 787 Max 8 is the second Boeing aircraft to experience serious technical problems soon after its introduction, leading some analysts to question whether Boeing may have overlooked quality concerns as it strives to meet rising global demand.

"We also plan to conduct a flight reconstruction to see the impact of the AOA sensor damage in the engineering simulator at the Boeing facility in Seattle".

The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation has begun an audit of Lion Air (JT, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) and has also started impromptu checks of various other Indonesian carriers following the crash of one of the low-priced carrier's B737-8s on October 29.

Is No Credit Better Than Having Bad Credit?
In fact, that’s the best possible use of credit — engaging it to do something that can help you make money. No Credit The good news about having no credit history is there’s nothing negative about you out there.

Soerjanto Tjahjono, head of Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee told reporters that after one flight from Bali to Jakarta - the last flight before the crash - the left and right AOA sensors were found to disagree by 20 degrees.

Data extracted from the flight recorders revealed that the aircraft experienced problems with airspeed indicators during its last four flights.

The person, who wished to remain unnamed, noted that when pilots are manually flying Boeing 737 Maxes, the jet is prone to automatically push down the nose if the plane determines that an aerodynamic stall is imminent.

And in this case the procedure for dealing with the problem it is what is called a "memory item" - pilot's commit them to memory.

The plane is the latest generation of Boeing's workhorse narrowbody aircraft, with more than 200 delivered since it entered service a year ago and a total of 4,700 orders placed by airlines around the world.

Bloomberg says the plane's velocity was uncharacteristically high, possibly touching speeds of 600 miles an hour as it hit the water. According to NBC News, the warning revolves around what pilots should do if the plane gives an erroneous reading from a sensor.

This isn't to say that the Lion Air crew was necessarily in the latter group-despite safety problems in the past with this airline, this specific crew may have absolutely been first-rate aviators, yet still suffered the same fate-but the fact is that we're in an era of increasing automation in aviation that's still 100 percent overseen by human pilots. Body parts are still being recovered and searchers continue to hunt for the cockpit voice recorder.
