As Sessions ousted, SC protesters to join nationwide call for Mueller protections

In an op-ed Whitaker wrote past year, he argued that "any investigation into President Trump's finances or the finances of his family would require Mueller to return to Rod Rosenstein for additional authority under Mueller's appointment as special counsel". Trump has denied his campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

Protesters' demands include having Whitaker recuse himself from overseeing Mueller's investigation, and for Congress to protect the probe with legislation.

Trump named Sessions' chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, as acting attorney general, saying he would soon nominate a permanent replacement for review by the Senate.

There are still questions about Whitaker's ability to take over as Attorney General, due to the fact that he served as Session's chief of staff and was not confirmed by the Senate. "That goes beyond the scope of the appointment of the special counsel."Beyond the Mueller investigation, Whitaker revealed himself to be a hardline conservative when he ran for the U.S. Senate in 2014 before eventually losing in a primary to Sen".

Beyond Mueller, but also within the Justice Department's oversight, is a federal investigation into Trump's longtime legal fixer, Michael Cohen, who admitted as part of a guilty plea in August to coordinating with Trump on a hush-money scheme to silence a porn actress and an ex-Playboy model who say they had affairs with Trump.

Since stepping into his new role on Wednesday, Whitaker has faced questions - principally from Democrats - about whether he should recuse from the Russian Federation investigation, given that he has written opinion pieces in the past about the investigation, and is a friend and political ally of a witness.

Trump "crossed a red line" in appointing Whitaker to oversee the Mueller probe, the group wrote on its website. "There's no collusion", Trump said on Wednesday.

In an op-ed published a year ago by CNN, Whitaker warned Mueller would be crossing a "red line" if his investigation looked into the finances of the Trump family.

"I think Congress should regulate things that harm people, and that is the hard drugs and the like that dramatically hurt citizens, cause violent crime in our communities, and those should be regulated", he said.

Trump had repeatedly criticized Sessions for recusing himself from any investigation into potential Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election. According to Conway, this come in violation of the Constitution's appointments clause.

"Trump's actions are being compared with those of U.S. President Richard Nixon in one of the most controversial episodes of the Watergate scandal, the Saturday Night Massacre", said organizers.

Never in modern history has a president attacked a Cabinet member as frequently and harshly in public as Trump did Sessions, a former U.S. senator from Alabama and one of the first members of Congress to back Trump's presidential campaign in 2015.

Sessions took himself out of decision-making on the probe in March 2017 even after Trump dispatched the White House lawyer to persuade him not to do so, according to a person familiar with the matter.

As reason for his recusal, Sessions cited news reports of two undisclosed meetings he had with Sergey Kislyak, then Russia's ambassador to Washington.

'The rule of law is disappearing before our eyes, ' tweeted former deputy attorney general Sally Yates, who was the first senior figure fired by Trump.

Earlier on Wednesday, Mr Trump denied he would shut down Mr Mueller's team, but still labelled the investigation an illegal "witch hunt" that had spent "millions" of dollars.

While Whitaker is now Mueller's ultimate supervisor, it was not immediately clear whether that meant Rosenstein would step aside.

In piercing attacks, Trump called Sessions weak and beleaguered. He'll likely be remembered as the worst Attorney General in American history.
