ENGLISH winger Tom Makinson is the shock victor of the 2018 Golden Boot Award, beating out James Tedesco, Elliott Whitehead and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak for the honour.

The 27 year old popular winger had the game of his life on Sunday, against the Kiwis, scoring a hat trick ( including one of the tries of the season to win it ) and just as important 3 last gasp tackles to save tries when the players looked more likely to score.

The 27-year-old's surprise selection for the award caps off a breakthrough season on the worldwide scene. Tedesco was overlooked despite being named man of the match in Australia's Test win over Tonga, with his efforts in helping the Sydney Roosters to the NRL premiership and NSW to State of Origin success ignored.

However, Tedesco was hurt by the judging criteria in 2018, with the award recognising the most outstanding performances in worldwide football.

It covers all global games played from the World Cup final in December to Sunday's Test between the Kiwis and England.

Makinson, who won the Golden Boot on Wednesday and debuted for England in Denver in June, is keen to try his hand down under in the future.

The Woolsey fire started on Thursday afternoon south of the city of Simi Valley, Ventura County officials said . Another blaze just west of that area, dubbed the Hill Fire , topped 10,000 acres on Thursday.

Roosters and Australian centre Isabelle Kelly was named the inaugural Golden Boot victor from the women's game after a starring season.

Kelly pipped Jillaroos teammates Ali Brigginshaw and Brittany Breayley for the award, along with Kiwi Ferns winger Honey Hireme and England's Georgia Roche.

Kelly scored twice for the Jillaroos as they won last year's women's World Cup in Australia, while also being recognised for her performance against New Zealand earlier this year.

"That's all I've ever seen of him and he's the best player in the world?"

The award is chosen by a panel drawn from rugby league media in both the northern and southern hemispheres.
