Five takeaways from Michigan's 2018 midterm election

The still-undigested lesson of the 2016 primaries - with the furiously anti-establishment Trump winning on the right and democratic socialist Bernie Sanders giving establishment scion Hillary Clinton a run for her money on the left - is that the American political system is ready for realignment, with each of the two parties vying to become the vehicle for a coherent populist message. While it wasn't the "blue wave" some had predicted, Democrats successfully flipped the House of Representatives and progressed toward more gender-balanced representation in Congress. Thanks to the 2018 midterm elections, 113 women now serve in Congress-surpassing the current record of 107 according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

Against the backdrop of a strong economy, Republicans avoided blowout losses in the key United States midterm vote but President Trump's economic agenda will be sharply curtailed by Democratic gains. He cited "questionable things" done by Democrats, including "leaks of classified information".

The three remaining Senate races were either still tallying precinct reports or the results were still too close to officially call. He openly mocked members who tried to survive by distancing themselves from him, calling them out by name and adding sarcastically, "too bad".

"Mia Love gave me no love and she lost", Trump said.

And Trump - who said Democrats would "take a wrecking ball to our economy" - now has two ready-made scapegoats to blame for any slowdown: the Democratic-controlled House, and Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, who he has repeatedly attacked for raising rates.

"Mike, will you be my running mate?"

But he said the Senate's chief priority will be confirming Mr. Trump's nominees, including judicial picks. "Those that worked with me in this incredible Midterm Election, embracing certain policies and principles, did very well", he tweeted.

"I would love to see unity and peace and love, if they would cover me fairly, which they don't", Trump said at the press conference in the East Room of the White House.

The investigation has been exploring Trump's potential collusion with Russian Federation as a candidate, obstruction of justice as president, and financial entanglements as a business executive.

Top Democrats said they would use their control of both chambers to take action on several key issues, including funding Medicaid expansion, keeping $160 million in school funding in place and addressing the opioid crisis, as well as workforce development, student debt relief and promotion of renewable energy.

Democrats also made significant headway with attorney general positions.

'Predator' wind farms upset the food chain
Blood samples were collected from lizards picked up from both sites - areas with wind farm and area without wind farms. Researchers found nearly four times more predatory birds in areas without wind turbines than around wind farms.

Now that the 2018 midterm elections are over, with just a handful of recounts and outstanding results, the race for 2020 is heating up. Republicans will also have a majority in both houses of state legislatures in 30 states, while Democrats will have a majority in 18 states. In fact, "more women won House seats than ever before", says The Guardian.

But Republicans held onto governor's mansions in OH and Florida, fending off challenges from strong left-wingers.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who's likely to become the House speaker, has pledged to preserve documentation of the investigation and holds the threat of impeachment hearings up her sleeve if Trump tries to dump Mueller or if the investigation finds evidence of criminal behavior. If these more economically populist bills passed the House (presumably with a good deal of Republican support), it would divide the Democrats, setting up intraparty squabbles heading into 2020. Mr. Trump's explosive press conference Wednesday, in which all decorum vanished between the president and certain reporters, showed how prepared he was for combat (as were the reporters) even as he insisted he could deploy a softer tone.

Lou Leon Guerrero from the USA territory of Guam the first female governor elected on Tuesday keeping the female wave going in the midterm elections.

Stock market gains this year may indeed continue - stocks historically have climbed following midterm elections.

Going into the voting, Republicans were defending majorities of 121-82 in the House and 34-16 in the Senate.

"We are in a battle". He also would have a more prominent platform from which to critique the White House.

"My hope is some GOP institutionalists will speak out, but it is hard to see who that might be", said Tobias. And yet, Trump has been trying to create the impression that the polls were a "tremendous success" for the Republicans as they retained their majority in the Senate, with 51 seats in a house of 100 senators.

The result was broadly in line with what many analysts projected but makes for a confusing picture.

The dynamics could resemble what occurred in 2011 and 2012, when Democrat Beverly Perdue was governor and House Republicans were four seats short of a veto-proof majority.

But, in another tweet on Wednesday, he told those candidates who avoided him to "say goodbye!"
