Imelda Marcos disqualified from holding office after corruption conviction

"Wherefore, judgment is hereby rendered finding the accused, Imelda R. Marcos, guilty beyond reasonable doubt for violation of R.A. No. 3019 Section 3 (h)... whereby she is sentenced in each case to suffer an indeterminate penalty of imprisonment of six years and one month, as minimum, to 11 years, as maximum, with perpetual disqualification from holding public office", the dispositive portion of the decision read.

Ilocos Norte 2nd District Representative Imelda Marcos (middle) talks to her children, Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos and ex-senator Bongbong Marcos, during a congressional hearing on August 9, 2017. She can still post bail for her temporary liberty as graft is a bailable case, the amount, however, has yet to be set by the court.

The Marcos family has refused to admit guilt on human rights abuses and corruption - including an estimated $10 billion (roughly ₱500 billion) allegedly stolen from government coffers - during the late President's term.

The family fled to Hawaii in 1986 when the army and the Philippine people turned against the president in a bloodless popular revolt.

The charges relate to alleged illicit financial dealings with Swiss-based NGOs while serving in her husband's government in the 1970s and 80s. "The president chose William Saunders and Imelda Marcos used Jane Ryan", special prosecutor Ryan Quilala told reporters.

And, it’s important to account for the time and effort spent by administrative staff handling these denied claims. They also have the potential to adversely affect patients’ opinions about the organization.

Duterte's spokesman, Salvador Panelo, said in a statement the ruling against Imelda Marcos was proof that the executive "is not in the business of exerting undue interference or influence" on courts, and therefore respects the decision.

"He is presently studying the decision and has advised us that he intends to file a motion for reconsideration", she added.

The court's decision came almost three decades after the case was filed.

The family's notoriety stems back to Ferdinand Marcos declaring martial law in 1972. That allowed him to shutter the legislature, muzzle the free press and jail or kill those who dared to oppose his dictatorship.

The Marcos family's ill-gotten wealth "is estimated between US$5 billion to US$10 billion, the bulk of it being deposited and hidden overseas", according to the the Philippine Commission on Good Government (PCGG).
