One of his friends there in the room continued, "He had his voice and he said "I love you" several times to Katie". Off Sam went. Bang.

He quickly became unwell, and it wasn't until Sam was later in Emergency that he wondered out loud to his mum Katie if eating a garden slug could be linked to the weakness, dizziness, pain in his legs, and violent vomiting he was experiencing.

Found in rodents, the worm can sometimes infect snails or slugs with the parasite if they consume the rodents' excrement.

A coma lasting 420 agonising days ensued and when he woke he was diagnosed with an acquired brain injury.

To Katie, we can only begin to imagine the pain you are going through.

A man who ate a garden slug as part of a dare has died.

"He contracted rat lung disease with devastating effects", Lisa told the show.

When he was released from hospital, three years after being admitted, his friends rallied around him and tried to raise as much money as possible to help with the medical bills, but sadly it was never enough.

Ballard was "surrounded by his family and loyal, loving mates" when he passed away, she said.

"His last words to his mum: "I love you".

She also asks the women, "Do I need to bring out my concealed weapon, too? They're trying to cause a problem", Westwood said. According to the tape, Westwood also tells the 911 dispatcher, "They've been hanging out here for awhile".

Mr Ballard died on Friday night at the age of 29. When he did, the former rugby standout "just started bawling his eyes out".

His close friends often visited him, even if it was a "shock" to see their mate struggling.

He said: 'When I walked in, he was very very gaunt, and there were cables everywhere - it was a big shock'.

"It made his day", his mates said.

Before the accident, Mr Ballard's mother Katie described how she saw her son as "invincible", writing in a 2011 Facebook post that she hoped he would walk again. "He is still the same cheeky Sam, and laughs a lot", she wrote.

However, in September 2017, she was told this was being cut to AUD $135,000 - a move Katie says has left her family heavily in debt.

In 2016, Katie Ballard applied to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) when Sam became eligible for a £300,000 package.

The massive funding cut was without explanation and around-the-clock care means the Ballard family are heavily in debt and now owe a nursing service £25,000.
