NASA’s InSight beams back breathtakingly clear photo of Mars

NASA's online live broadcast reported InSight touched down on Mars at approximately 2:54 p.m. EST (1954 GMT), after a six-month, 300-million-mile (480-million-km) journey. So, engineers from the space agency were twitchy sending off InSight and its satellites, particularly when it hit Mars" atmosphere and was faced with "seven minutes of terror'.

Flight controllers announced that the spacecraft InSight had reached the surface just before 7am AEDT, after a perilous supersonic descent through the red Martian skies.

A Tense Landing NASA engineers were forced to wait until the landing was over to know whether it was successful, as there's an eight-minute delay in communications between Mars and Earth and the landing only took about seven minutes.

"Landing on Mars is one of the hardest single jobs that people have to do in planetary exploration", InSight's lead scientist, Bruce Banerdt, told The Associated Press.

InSight now sits on a vast plain known as Elysium Planitia, close to the planet's equator, from which it will help develop an understanding of Mars's inner workings.

In the following days, NASA's InSight is expected to conduct a self-audit of all its scientific instruments on board, and survey the martian surface for an optimal site to deploy these instruments.

Similar proposals were blasted by conservatives as proposals to "turn the United States into a agricultural colony of China". It cited tensions over Chinese technological development, a focus of US concern.

It landed less than 600 kilometres from NASA's Curiosity rover, which until Monday was the youngest working robot on the planet. Its ultra-sensitive seismometer (Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure, or SEIS, experiment) will detect seismic waves rippling through Mars and, by measuring their propagation through the subsurface, will assemble a detailed picture of Mars's interior for the first time. That photo came from a camera low on the lander. The heat shield was also dumped.

And they can actually interpolate that, they think, all the way down to the core of the planet.

To further explore Mars, the lander must be at a place where it can stay still and quiet for its entire mission. It is not presently tectonically active, and its volcanoes have been dormant for hundreds of millions of years.

Still, there are no life detectors aboard InSight. Immediately after planting, InSight made the surface of Mars, and later transferred to Earth and a "selfie". "That's exactly what we were going for". Verification will come from NASA's Odyssey spacecraft, now orbiting Mars.

"There is great interest in knowing what is underneath", said Padir, who has done extensive research on robotics. The self-hammering mole will burrow five metres down to measure the planet's internal heat, while the seismometer listens for possible quakes.

Its landing was a stressful event for scientists, according to the AP. As a rule, meteors will gouge a hole approximately a tenth as deep as the crater's diameter. "This one insane number will tell us so much about the history of Mars as well as the present day-that's what I'm most excited to get". Nothing has ever dug deeper into Mars than several inches. This tension quickly turned to excitement once InSight landed, however.
