Sri Lanka fought back admirably against England thanks to a back-to-the-wall 85 by Roshen Silva to earn a first-innings lead of 46 runs in the second test on Thursday.

England faced just one over before stumps on day two and promoted Leach to open the innings. Curran, fast becoming an England hero, said reaching near 300 was a "massive" achievement.

That dismissal brought opener Dimuth Karunaratne and de Silva together, and the duo built a stand of 96 through some smart batting with England's bowlers looking bereft of ideas as the partnership grew.

Earlier, Curran and Adil Rashid added 45 runs for the eighth wicket with Rashid contributing 31 runs.

Buttler's 63 off 67 deliveries ensured Sri Lanka did not convert a good position into a dominant one, as he swept and reverse swept furiously and effectively.

He acknowledged the ball was spinning more than at Galle - "sometimes it was spinning too much to find the outside edge" - and he pointed out how the ball moved more slowly as it grew older and softer. Curran's knock comprised of six sixes and a four. He's pretty much been faultless and long-term see him as a focal part of the Test team. Getting close to 300 was massive for us. "Me and Jimmy had quite a bit of fun out there". He was probably the one telling me to calm down and trust him.

Jos Buttler (63) looked in fine fettle as he helped get England back on track with a half-century that included seven boundaries, but Ben Foakes (19) bizarrely did not suggest a review and simply walked off despite not appearing to have connected with the bat when he was caught off Dilruwan at slip. He was out for 19.

Sri Lankan spinners combined to bowl out England for 285 after the tourists' new number three Ben Stokes and skipper Joe Root fell cheaply in the second Test on Wednesday.

"It was a big surprise for us to hear of Cricket Sri Lanka's booking issue and the threat that the match itself might be moved altogether".

Sri Lanka have gone a notch above than the visitors due to their lower order heroics.

Keaton Jennings, fresh from his redemptive 146 not out, was out for a single this time - feeling for Suranga Lakmal outside off stump in a reminder of his summer struggles against seam.

Curran added 60 runs for the last wicket with James Anderson to push England's total close to 300.
