Stop sending mail and parcels, Canada Post asks foreign services

Canadians doing online shopping for Christmas, may need to get it finished very early in order to get it on time. The postal operator detailed the terms of its latest offer to employees in a statement this week, including a pay increase of 2 per cent a year, a signing bonus of up to $1,000, a $10 million health and safety fund and overtime pay.

"Should the Canada Post service disruptions continue through this key retail moment, these SMBs will be seriously disadvantaged in competing for US demand". The offer was made with the expected influx of Christmas and other holiday orders in mind, the statement said.

Canada Post said recent major shutdowns of parcel processing in Toronto and Vancouver have created a backlog of almost 500 tractor-trailer loads of parcels and packages that need to be sorted - 375 trailers in Toronto and 120 as of Thursday morning in Vancouver.

CUPW members in Thompson were out on the picket line outside the post office on Selkirk Avenue beginning at 6 a.m.in bitterly cold temperatures approaching -30 Celsius.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has staged rotating strikes across the country since October 22.

Contract talks are now into their 11th month, and the latest offer expires Saturday at midnight. Only time will tell how the high-volume holiday season will be affected. "We're shipping everything out as fast as we can", said marketing manager Alicia Kurz.

The halt doesn't affect mail leaving Canada, but like domestic mail, it will be subject to delays resulting from the rotating strikes, a spokesperson for Canada Post said in an email to CBC News. While the rotating strikes are causing some difficulties, a full strike could make matters much worse.

Canadians hoping to receive packages from global shippers in the interim might face delays too.

Britain's Royal Mail, in a bulletin to its corporate customers, said it would hold any shipments bound for Canada within the last couple of days in its distribution centres "awaiting further updates".

Ebay called on the Canadian federal government Wednesday to put an end to the Canada Post contract dispute yesterday, stating that action was particularly important with Black Friday and Cyber Monday looming and warned of the effects it may have on Canadian businesses.
