Style nationalism comes under fire at WWI commemorations in Paris

More than 30 million people were killed during World War I. Only two decades later, 40 more million became victims of World War II, with half of them estimated to have been civilians.

Under a glass canopy at the foot of the Arc de Triomphe, built by Emperor Napoleon in 1806, Trump, Merkel, Macron, Putin and the other leaders listened through earpieces as the French president spoke.

"The traces of this war never went away", Macron said, "The old demons are rising again".

Macron delivered a stinging indictment of nationalism in a 20-minute speech and called on leaders to learn the lessons of the past.

"Patriotism is the exact opposite nationalism".

In Paris, German Chancellor Angela Merkel was due to give the opening address alongside UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at a peace conference following the memorial service on the Champs-Elysees.

On Sunday, hundreds of Parisians massed in the city's Place de la Republique to demonstrate against Trump, who braved the rain elsewhere that morning to recognize the 100th anniversary of the armistice at the Arc de Triomphe.

Trump, who champions a nationalist "America first" policy, will not attend the forum but Putin is expected to. Trump and Putin arrived slightly later in separate motorcades.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin and Trump had agreed to hold a more detailed discussion on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Argentina at the end of the month.

"France and the USA have been side by side", another French official said, evoking World War I battlefields where US and French soldiers fought on the same side and the nations' joint operation against Syria earlier this year.

Together, responsible for the destruction of 179 structures, but another 57,000 are threatened, according to fire officials. As the state gets warmer each year, the threat of wildfires damaging property and taking lives grows more imminent.

World leaders are meeting in the French capital, Paris, for a peace meeting.

Celia Belin, a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution, wrote that the forum was part of a broader effort by the worldwide community to find "new approaches to save global cooperation".

But by pulling the United States out of a climate-change deal signed in Paris and other global deals that France embraces - and now, with his undiplomatic tweet before meeting Macron - Trump has made clear that the French leader is not holding the reins. So far, however, the tensions have only built, with the USA imposing new rounds of sanctions and vowing to pull out of a Cold War disarmament treaty.

"That's why we need a common approach".

Both of them have respectively been declared the new "leader of the free world" after US President Barack Obama stepped down.

"Mr. Macron! That is not possible, a little good woman like me shaking hands with the president of the republic".

Macron, who sat down with Zakaria Saturday night, said things were fine with the American president despite the tweet, saying he didn't know if Trump's Twitter missive was a mistake.

On Saturday, he and his wife Melania cancelled a trip to Belleau Wood battlefield and cemetery in northern France, citing "scheduling and logistical difficulties" caused by the rainy weather.

The armistice commemorations were full of passionate moments for the leaders of the two nations, which were at war 100 years ago. The global conflict originated in Europe, killing an estimated 8.5 million soldiers, and injuring 21 million more.
