The BMW M8 Will Belt Out 650bhp In Its Shoutiest Form

Fiercest of the BMW 8 Series, the company's luxury grand tourers taking on Porsche and others, the vehicle will deliver more than 600 horsepower, BMW said today.

We knew the BMW M8 was going to be a monster, but now the automaker is lifting the veil on just how potent a coupe we can expect. In the meantime, the Munich-based firm has released preliminary information about the range-topping M8.

The exact figure remains a mystery, but the M5 Competition has a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 that produces 617 hp (460 kW / 625 PS) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque.

All that grunt will be sent to the tarmac through an active rear differential and BMW's M xDrive performance all-wheel drive system, which features a rear bias and the ability to operate in two-wheel drive mode for tyre-shredding action. According to BMW, the latter turns the M8 into "an outright rear-wheel-drive machine, liberated from the shackles of control systems and free to lay on a driving experience of absolute purity".

Entire cities evacuate as hellish wildfires whip through California
The blaze also forced the partial evacuation of Malibu, a city of about 13,000 people that is home to many Hollywood celebrities. The singer Cher, who is performing in Las Vegas, tweeted that she was anxious about her Malibu home.

Since the model is a full-bore M auto, its upgrades will be far more extensive than those used on the M850i.

The prototype depicted in BMW's images is fully camouflaged, but we can tell it gets an M-specific body kit that adds larger air intakes chiseled into the front bumper, a spoiler on the trunk lid, and a new rear bumper.

The regular 8 Series is very much a GT auto, but we're promised the M8 will be sharper. 19-inch light alloy wheels will come standard and 20-inch units will be available at an extra cost.

Official market launch of the BMW M8 Coupe is expected in 2019 followed by derivatives of the model: the BMW M8 Convertible and the BMW Gran Coupe.
