Trump, Democrats confront thorny life under divided Congress

The Democrats have taken control of the US House of Representatives in the mid-term elections, dealing a blow to President Donald Trump.

The hotly contested race in Georgia, where Democrat Stacey Abrams was seeking to become the first black woman to be elected governor of a USA state, remained too close to call early on Wednesday.

Also, Democratic leaders in the House through committee positions can conduct investigations into the conduct of government officials, including the use of subpoenas to get documents, the ability to compel witnesses to testify, and the holding of witnesses in contempt for not testifying or providing information.

Midterm elections are typically hard for the party in power, but the GOP's hold on power was further weakened by an unusually large number of retirements as well as infighting between conservatives and centrists over their allegiance to Trump.

The news wire called the results a "mixed verdict", with the Democrats winning 224 House seats to the Republicans' 201, with remaining races to be finalized. However, in a "blue wave" that was more of a "ripple", Republicans have tightened their grip on the Senate.

Hours earlier, the president had tweeted that "now we can all get back to work and get things done!"

Republican businessman Mike Braun also beat the Democratic incumbent Joe Donnelly in the battleground state of in. where Trump won by 20 percentage points back in 2016. Trump as usual summed up the ridiculous Republican pretzel logic by saying "the Democrat plan would obliterate ObamaCare" at a rally this week. Democrats will be empowered to investigate a growing list of concerns about the Trump administration. But Congress could not remove him from office without a conviction by a two-thirds majority in the Republican-controlled Senate, an unlikely scenario.

Donald Trump will facing greater scrutiny as the Democrats took control of the House in the midterm elections for the first time in eight years. In almost every state with a key contested Senate or governor's race, he has a positive approval and is over 50%, according to CNN's preliminary exit poll data.

Trump, as he did throughout the campaign, also blamed the media for sowing division in the country and insisted they were to blame for the scene unfolding in the East Room.

But in Georgia, Democrat Stacey Abrams - who was hoping to become the first black female governor in the U.S. - refused to concede as her Republican opponent Brian Kemp took a commanding lead after a bitter campaign.

"They can play that game, but we can play it better". Ayanna Pressley officially became Massachusetts's first black woman elected to Congress, after unseating ten-term Representative Michael Capuano in the state primary.

In Florida, Congressman Ron DeSantis narrowly won his race for governor. Kamala Harris, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Vice President Joe Biden.

Senate Democrats elected Sen.

Trump was expected to address the results at a post-election news conference scheduled for midday Wednesday.

The current House speaker is Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican who is retiring from Congress.

"Divisiveness is really tearing the country apart", Koutsogiogasi, a Democrat, said as he voted with his wife.

Instead they based their campaign on lies that a group of bedraggled refugees are mostly gang assassins and ISIS terrorists, lies that all Latino immigrants are grinning cop murderers - in an ad so racist even Fox News pulled it off the air - lies about Democrats somehow shipping jobs to North Korea, flagrant anti-Semitism, and on and on.

"There is going to be a historic number of women walking onto the floor of the U.S. House in January ..."

Governors and hundreds of legislators elected this year will be in office when congressional districts are redrawn after the 2020 Census.

Rashida Tlaib was born in the United States to Palestinian parents. They stand to pick up between 24 and 32 seats when all the races that are too close to call are finally decided.

In Colorado, Democrat Jared Polis became the first openly gay man to be elected governor of a US state.

However, Democrats did eke out a narrow win to beat Scott Walker in Wisconsin and comfortably won the governor's office in MI.
