Trump suggests Apple iPhones may get hit with 10% tariff

Just days ahead of a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump also vowed to put tariffs on all remaining imports from China if the two sides failed to reach a deal, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Apple stock is falling in Monday's after-hours session following a report that President Donald Trump may consider instituting tariffs on iPhones.

Chinese officials have said their priority at the meeting between Mr. Trump and President Xi Jinping is to convince the U.S.to suspend the planned January 1 increase in tariffs on $200 billion in imports from China to 25%, from 10% now.

"China has to open up their country to competition from the United States". "As far as other countries are concerned, that's up to them".

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Trump said he's not afraid to slap duties on consumer goods like iPhones.

"If we don't make a deal, then I'm going to put the $267 billion additional on", he said.

The study commissioned by the People's Vote, which wants a second referendum, said GDP would shrink by 3.9% annually. If they fail to do so that could mean the imposition of the backstop to ensure no disruption to the Irish border.

Beijing was hoping Washington would call off the planned increase as a result of this week's meeting between Trump and Xi at the G20 summit in Bueno Aires, Argentina.

US President Donald Trump says he is likely to go ahead with an increase on tariffs now imposed on Chinese goods at the start of 2019.

Cellphones and computers, among China's biggest exports to the United States, have thus far been spared as the administration has sought to minimise the impact on USA consumers. The Journal said the administration has been anxious about a consumer reaction to such levies.

"Maybe. Maybe. Depends on what the rate is", Trump said, talking about phones and laptop computers. "I mean, I can make it 10%, and people could stand that very easily".

Apple Inc., which has lost a fifth of its value in a tech market rout since October, is poised for another setback after U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that 10 percent tariffs could be placed on mobile phones, like the iPhone, and laptops made in China.

One reason the Trump administration made a priority of renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement was to encourage USA companies to shift their production from China to North America, if not the U.S.
