United Nations envoy: Warring parties in Yemen agree to meet in Sweden

Coalition sources say that the temporary halt to violence coincides with a renewed drive to start new peace talks, led by the United Nations envoy Martin Griffiths.

The bill introduced by Menendez and Graham would also impose USA sanctions on anyone blocking humanitarian aid deliveries to Yemen, but also on anyone providing support to the Houthis.

Yemen's riyal has lost more than half its value against the United States dollar since the start of the war. But it won't stay there.

The last round of talks in Geneva in September aimed at ending Yemen's nearly four-year-old war were cancelled after three days of waiting for a Houthi delegation, which failed to arrive. Griffiths said he is determined to take advantage of "the global attention and energy" to move toward peace. "If we don't address this quickly we will lose it", Mr Griffiths said.

The envoy pointed to the Troubles in Northern Ireland and how they were ultimately resolved with a political solution, signalling that the same acceptance into mainstream politics of Sinn Fein would need to happen with the Houthis.

"We need to find an appropriate formula for the involvement of Ansar Allah and other political parties throughout Yemen in a government of unity that alone will be able to make the transition from war to peace", Mr Griffiths said.

Trump says he finished answering questions for Mueller investigation
While he repeatedly stated that his legal team has not been involved in helping him write his responses to Mueller, Trump expressed concern over investigators looking to catch him perjuring himself.

He welcomed a call last month by Jim Mattis, the USA defence secretary, and Mike Pompeo, the secretary of state, for a cessation of hostilities in Yemen and resumption of peace talks.

A group of senators on the Foreign Relations Committee, led by Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey) and Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) introduced the "Saudi Arabia Accountability and Yemen Act of 2018". He also said the UK's efforts behind the scene were important.

Western countries have provided arms and intelligence to the Arab states in the alliance, but have shown increasing reservations about the conflict since the murder of US-based Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul early last month. The war, almost four years old, may have killed as many as 80,000 people, according to the figures, not counting the untold numbers who have died of hunger in the humanitarian disaster wreaked by the conflict.

Saudi and UAE-backed militias have been told to stop the 12-day-old assault until further notice, several Yemeni military officials said on Wednesday night, adding that operations would resume if the Houthis attacked coalition positions.

The spotlight has fallen on what many viewed as the long forgotten war in Yemen since the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul on October 2. Sky News visits Yemen as starving civilians flee the war there.

"This is a crucial moment for Yemen", he said, warning that a flare-up of fighting on the ground could derail the peace effort.
