The Redskins released a statement addressing Smith's health on Thursday, saying they were requesting privacy for Smith and his family amid his recovery.

The 34-year-old is dealing with a "devastating complication" from leg surgery, according to "The Sports Junkies" on 106.7 The Fan host Eric Bickel, who cited sources.

The Washington Redskins have asked for privacy for Alex Smith and his family amid reports the quarterback is dealing with complications from surgery to fix a broken leg. Doctors reportedly performed surgery on Smith immediately in hopes of preventing an infection, but he appears to have contracted one anyway.

Smith suffered a compound fracture, meaning the bone broke through his skin after being sacked by Kareem Jackson on November 18. That alone tells you how serious the injury is.

In 21 regular season starts between the Rays and Red Sox, he went 6-7 with an ERA of 3.81 and a WHIP of 1.12. He recorded two holds - one in the clinching Game 5 of the ALCS, the other in Game 4 of the World Series.

Burgundy Blog, a Redskins-focused website, first reported the complications related to Smith's recovery.

Smith initially was replaced by quarterback Colt McCoy but he broke his leg Monday night against the Eagles, leaving Mark Sanchez as the team's top quarterback. "We would ask that everyone please honour the Smith family's request for privacy at this time".

Smith was 6-4 as a starter when he went down with his injury.
