British backpacker Grace Millane last seen at Auckland hotel with 'male companion'

Detective Inspector Scott Beard told reporters the investigation is focusing on videos from surveillance cameras around the city.

Beard said police held grave fears for the 22-year-old tourist's safety, and the investigation was progressing rapidly.

Auckland City Police said the last known sighting of Grace Millane, who has not been heard from since December 1, was at the Citylife Hotel at 9.41pm that night with a male companion.

Mr Millane said she was always in contact with her family and his parents were anxious.

Mr Beard said police found some of Ms Millane's items at the backpackers she was staying at in the Auckland CBD but wouldn't divulge what the contents were.

Detective Scott Beard also gave an update on the case.

He said there is no evidence of foul play and that Ms Milane is still being treated as missing, but added: "At this point we hold grave concerns for her safety".

David Millane, fighting back tears, struggled to speak as he described his "lovely, outgoing, fun-loving, family-oriented daughter".

Police are asking anyone who may have seen her or who knows where she is to get in touch.

A post by her brother had been shared on social media nearly 40,000 times. "As a family we've been extremely concerned about her welfare".

"She arrived here on the 20th of November, and has been bombarding us with numerous photographs and messages of her adventures", Millane said.

"We are all extremely upset and it's very hard at this time to fully describe the range of emotions we are going through".

He appealed for people with information to contact police - no detail was too small, Millane said.

Her distraught father, David Millane, 60, a property developer from Essex, arrived in New Zealand early this morning and appeared at a press conference with police.

"It has now been six days since Grace was last seen", Beard said.

Prayers will be said for Miss Millane at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church in Wickford, where she lives with her family, over the weekend.

"A large part of that focus has been around CCTV footage around Auckland".
