Huawei CFO Meng fights for bail in Canada

Attorneys for Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications company Huawei, told a Canadian court Monday that their client was willing to wear an ankle monitor and pay a surveillance company to keep tabs on her.

People line up prior to the bail hearing for Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's chief financial officer.

She was detained at the request of the US during a layover at the Vancouver airport on December 1.

In the meantime, while China has denounced the arrest, it hasn't linked it to trade talks with the U.S.as experts say it doesn't want to undermine the prospects for a trade deal. -China trade tensions at a time when the two countries are seeking to resolve a dispute over Beijing's technology and industrial strategy. The Wall Street Journal, citing the defense documents, reported that Meng underwent surgery to treat thyroid cancer in 2011, now suffers from hypertension, and had surgery on her jaw and throat to fix issues related to sleep apnea earlier this year, making it hard for her to eat solid food. Martin says Meng would cover the expenses of the company and says the surveillance company will arrest her if she tries to flee.

"I continue to feel unwell and I am anxious about my health deteriorating while I am incarcerated", the affidavit read.

Meng said she'd suffered numerous health problems, including surgery for thyroid cancer in 2011.

Monday is the second day of a hearing on whether to release Meng on bail in Canada.

Their ambassadors in Beijing were summoned by the Chinese government over the weekend, and an editorial in China's Communist Party newspaper called her treatment "inhumane".

Beijing has demanded Meng's immediate release and threatened "consequences" for Canada.

"[There is] no evidence whatsoever so far Huawei has done anything illegal", he said.

On Friday, the Crown argued Meng should be denied bail, claiming she is a flight risk.

The US alleges Huawei used a shell company to sell equipment in Iran in violation of US sanctions.

Her lawyer says the opposite, in that her wealth should not be a factor and, in the 55-page affidavit, Meng details her ties to Vancouver, where she would live during any fight against extradition to the U.S.

At some point Wanzhou even became a permanent resident of Canada - although she has since relinquished her status.

At the hearing, Crown asked for $15 million to be set as bail amount, adding $7.5 million should be cash instead of the proposed $1 million.

China accused Canada of violating a bilateral agreement by failing to speedily inform its consulate of the arrest of Huawei Technologies Co.

Meng's arrest occurred on the same day U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping were meeting in Buenos Aires over dinner to reach a 90-day truce on tit-for-tat tariffs the two countries have been imposing on exports of $300 billion of goods to each other.

The company faces being shut out of Australia, New Zealand and USA 5G rollouts, and British telecom group BT revealed last Wednesday it was removing Huawei equipment from its core cellular network.

Huawei's affordable smartphones have made strong inroads in the developing world, but the company has faced repeated setbacks in major Western economies over security concerns.
