Rescue mission in Japan after 'mishap' involving two Marine aircraft

"Search and rescue operations continue for U.S. Marine aircraft that were involved in a mishap off of the coast of Japan around 2:00 a.m. December 6.", a Marine Corps news release said.

The aircraft - a KC-130 and an F/A-18 Hornet - had launched from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in southern Japan.

The incident occurred about 200 miles off the coast of Iwakuni at 2 a.m. on Thursday, or about noon Wednesday, Eastern Standard Time. The base has seen serious expansion in recent years and is now home to fixed-wing aircraft belonging to CVW-5, USS Ronald Reagan's air wing, which moved from its long-established home at NAF Atsugi earlier in the year.

The Marines said in a statement that Japanese search and rescue aircraft responded and were aiding in the rescue effort. The statement added that the incident was under investigation.
