Flight 278, carrying 112 passengers and five crew, had just landed in Burbank on a flight from Oakland, said Brandy King, a spokeswoman for the Dallas-based carrier.

METAR reports for BUR from immediately before and after the incident indicate the airport was experiencing heavy rains and mist.

Although the cause of the overrun has yet to be determined, the airport was reporting inclement weather conditions at the time of the event. EMAS is created to safely stop planes that overshoot runways, according to the FAA's website.

Emergency slides have also been deployed to help passengers off.

"We didn't realize what was going on, it was that fast", said a passenger, Gary Scott.

Pakistan Urges US to Leave Afghanistan 'As Friend of the Region'
Some 14,000 USA soldiers are now serving in Afghanistan, and McKenzie couldn't say how much longer the United States would remain in the country.

"We were primed for something to happen", Colette Carlson said, adding that she couldn't see outside during landing because of water covering her window, but she could feel that the plane was heading towards the end of the runway.

A unique safety system that has been installed at several Bay Area airports may have prevented a catastrophic crash of a Burbank-bound flight out of Oakland Thursday morning.

One of the airport's runways is closed but the airport is open, and all airlines are operational, according to the airport Twitter account.

No one was injured in the incident that occurred about 9:05 a.m. local time.

Over six hours, the area received 1.66 inches of rain.
