The Los Angeles Sparks have named five-time National Basketball Association champion and former New York Knicks boss Derek Fisher as their new head coach.

Fisher's experience includes holding the National Basketball Association record for playoff game appearances (259), serving as the players' union president and coaching the New York Knicks from 2014-2016.

Fisher, 44, helped the Los Angeles Lakers win five National Basketball Association titles during his 18-season playing career and served as president of the players' union.

When Jackson was hired by the Knicks, the former Lakers and Bulls coach called upon Fisher to be his head coach. He went 17-65 in 2014-15 as a rookie head coach and was sacked the following season with the Knicks sporting a 23-31 record.

Greenland's ice sheet melt rate unprecedented, happening faster than anybody thought
Instead of escaping the ice sheet, the short-lived meltwater forms icy bands that stack up layers of densely packed ice over time. The study confirms ice loss from Greenland is one of the main factors contributing to the sea level rise .

"I'm excited to be the new head coach of the LA Sparks", Fisher said.

Fisher becomes the 12 head coach in Sparks franchise history. "Derek is a proven victor, tough under pressure and is a true believer in the power of the WNBA and the opportunities it provides for women on and off the court".

It's a bit surprising that the Sparks are bringing in a guy with a checkered past and a brutal win-loss record as a head coach. Agler had an 85-51 record with the Sparks and led the team to the 2016 WNBA championship.

An introductory news conference is set for noon Friday during which Fisher, All-Star center Candace Parker, Penny Toler, executive vice president and general manager, and Eric Holoman, managing director and governor who is a member of the Sparks ownership group, will participate.
