City of Light wins $9 million Pegasus Cup

In the Pegasus World Cup, another NY track regular, Javier Castellano would go on to pilot City Of Light to victory by more than 5 lengths over Seeking the Soul and John Valazquez, with Accelerate in third with Joel Rosario aboard.

"I think I rode the best horse in the race", City of Light jockey Javier Castellano said.

Ron Flatter's weekly racing column is posted every Friday morning at VSiN.com and more frequently during coverage of big races.

The Pletcher-trained Audible won the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park before finishing third to Justify in the Kentucky Derby. While expressing his gratitude to City of Light for giving him the greatest win of his training career, McCarthy savored the final few moments with the horse before he boarded a horse van bound for Lane's End Farm, where he will enter stud this year.

City of Light's connections only get $4 million of the $9 million purse, but that's certainly nothing to scoff at. Like Accelerate, City of Light is also being retired after this race.

Accelerate's retirement was postponed after the Breeders' Cup just for a chance to run in the Pegasus.

The Classic-to-Pegasus path had proven successful in the past for Arrogate in 2017 and Gun Runner previous year.

McCarthy acknowledged it will be tough going back to his Santa Anita barn with City of Light not being there.

Singer Gets Tattoo Of Harry Styles On Her Cheek
She had hinted on Twitter earlier this month that she was planning to do something for Harry on his birthday, which is February 1. She told i-D in July previous year that she really wants to work with Styles at some point.

Seeking the Soul, a 30-1 long shot, got up for second.

"He's looking awesome", said Juan Leyva, the assistant for Accelerate trainer John Sadler, as he watched Accelerate familiarizing himself with the Gulfstream surroundings.

So much for needing experience on wet tracks to win America's two richest horse races. It's dark. And you're slipping around out there.

It was the first time since November of 2017 that Accelerate finished worse than second.

For City of Light, it more than paid off.

Throughout Saturday's racing card, front runners held a distinct advantage over horses that came from off the early pace. Late Sunday morning, City of Light and Accelerate, the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) victor who finished another 1 1/2 lengths back in third, were to load onto a Sallee horse van for the trip to Lane's End Farm in Versailles, Ky., where both are joining the elite breeding operation's stallion roster.

"Obviously, we'd been waiting quite a while to get to the Breeders' Cup", he said.

Their horse won convincingly, with Castellano requiring only mild urging to record the lopsided win. Three-time reigning Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown sends Bricks and Mortar (five wins and two thirds in seven career starts) to the turf, and Japanese shipper Aerolithe already has won $3 million in his career, by far the most of any entry in the 10-horse Pegasus turf field. Had Accelerate prevailed, he would have retired with career earnings of almost $10 million and been ranked among the top 10 thoroughbred earners in North America.
