Republican Steve King denies he is racist after his comments about white supremacy attracted widespread criticism

A right-wing Republican congressman is under fire from his own party after questioning why terms like "white supremacy" are controversial.

King did not dispute the quote, although he said it was taken out of context.

On Wednesday, Iowa state Sen.

King, an Iowa Republican, made that proclamation Friday in a combative statement delivered on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, in which he tried to explain comments he made during an interview with the New York Times that was published a day earlier. "Why did I sit in classes teaching me about the merits of our history and our civilization?" he said in a almost hourlong interview with a Times reporter.

"When people with opinions similar to King's open their mouths, they damage not only the Republican Party and the conservative brand but also our nation as a whole".

Kaufmann, a college history professor, wasn't sure when those terms were not offensive.

Until cooler heads prevail, Graham said Friday, "This thing could go on for a while".

"So if you said "white supremacy" in Reconstruction days, it would essentially have about the same connotation that it does today", he said. For decades opposition to voting rights, fair housing policy, criminal justice reform, and public education have all been de facto stances for the Republican Party, and all of that has further entrenched racial inequality in America.

Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, the newly elected chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, called King's comments "abhorrent and racist and should have no place in our national discourse". The Declaration of Independence states that 'all men are created equal.' That is a fact.

Quarter UK growth 'may be boosted by Brexit stockpiling'
The company blamed collapsing sales of diesel cars, the US-China trade war and uncertainty about how Brexit will unfold. A year ago recorded 11 consecutive months of negative sales growth in brick-and-mortar stores since January.

Steve Scalise, the Republican whip in the House of Representatives, told reporters it was "offensive to try to legitimise those terms".

It seems insane to think that in 2019, a USA congressperson would be extolling the virtues of white supremacy, but here's Rep. Steve King spouting off about white heritage yet again.

"I want to make one thing abundantly clear: I reject those labels and the evil ideology that they define", King said. He did not apologize for his statements - just for the problems they had caused. "There's nothing about my family or my history or my neighborhood that (supports) these false accusations".

The context of the comment, King said, was obscured in the article.

"Republican leaders must actively support a worthy primary opponent to defeat King, because he won't have the decency to resign", Bush wrote.

King, 69, narrowly won re-election in November after easy victories in previous years. Randy Feenstra announced that he will run against King in the Republican primary.

Scott responded to King's remarks with a column in The Washington Post, and they were also denounced by several other members of the Republican Party.

"If Republicans really believe these racist statements have no place in our government, then their party must offer more than shallow temporary statements of condemnation", said CBC Chairwoman Rep. Karen Bass, D-California, in a statement.
