Michael Cohen Changes Up His Legal Team But 'Continues To Cooperate'

Last week, Cohen cited threats from Trump for postponing testimony before an open hearing of the House of Representatives Oversight Committee set for February 7.

Cohen earlier last week delayed his appearance before the House Oversight Committee on the advice of his legal team, citing ongoing cooperation in Mueller's Russian Federation investigation and threats against his family.

"Mr. Cohen has relayed to the Committee his legitimate concerns for his own safety as well as that of his family, which have been fueled by improper comments made by the President and his lawyer. We will continue to work with Mr. Cohen and law enforcement in order to protect Mr. Cohen and his family".

A source familiar with the shakeup told The Daily Caller News Foundation that the change is being made because the focus for Cohen is now on "Washington and Congress" rather than with prosecutors in NY.

Cohen, who was also subsequently charged with lying to Congress by special counsel Robert Mueller's office, pleaded guilty to all charges by both offices.

Cohen began to have reservations about the appearance following a series of public attacks by President Trump against him and his family, sources close to Cohen told ABC News earlier this month. He also has pleaded guilty to campaign-finance violations for his involvement in payments to a former Playboy model and an adult-film actress over alleged affairs with Trump.

Son's exhaustion is perhaps unsurprising given that he represented South Korea at both the World Cup and the Asian Games in September.

In December, Cohen was sentenced by a federal judge in Manhattan to three years in prison for crimes including orchestrating hush payments to women in violation of campaign laws before the 2016 election.

Also Monday, Cohen's lawyers announced a shake-up on his defense team as he continues to cooperate with Mueller and prepares for the congressional testimony.

Joining Cohen's legal team are Michael Monico, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney from the Northern District of IL, and longtime criminal defense attorney Barry Spevack to help Cohen navigate his cooperation in the investigations being conducted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, the New York Attorney General's Office and the congressional committees seeking his testimony.

Cohen's bringing on Monico and Spevack will mark his third adjustment to his legal team.

The legal shake-up followed what a person familiar with the matter described as a dispute over unpaid legal fees.

Davis disputed that characterization, saying the shake-up "had nothing to do with fees". He has since become one of Chicago's highest-profile white-collar attorneys dating back to the 1980s, representing those close to the levers of power in IL, including powerful aldermen, a confidant of now-imprisoned former Gov. Rod Blagojevich and several defendants accused of corruption in dealing with the city of Chicago.
