Rare Super Blood Moon eclipse to give stargazers triple treat

In fact, the first month of the year is going to bring a rare lunar event - Super Blood Moon - to excite amateur astronomers. The stargazer in me is loony over all the lunar projections!

Altogether there will six eclipses observable from planet Earth in 2019, including a total solar eclipse over parts of the Pacific, Chile and Argentina on July 2 like the one that wowed multitudes across the U.S. in the summer of 2017. During a Super Moon, the Moon is closer than usual to the Earth, making it look larger and brighter.

We begin 2019 with a partial solar eclipse, so it's only fair we also get a lunar one.

January 20: Catch a super, bloody and wolverine moon!

Super blood moon is a phenomenon in which the Moon appears particularly large and bright, with a reddish glow.

Those in the Americas and parts of Europe and Africa will have front-row seats to witness this.

For sky watchers in parts of north Asia, the new year will begin with the moon taking a "bite" out of the sun a few weeks before the rest of us are treated to the spooky-sounding conjunction of celestial events known as a "super blood wolf moon". No worries - NASA will be live streaming the entire episode.

Of course, cloudy winter skies could put an end to all that, but the United Kingdom is set to get the full experience of the eclipse on the eve of 20/21 January.

The Eta Aquarids was created by the dusty debris left behind by Halley's Comet, which flew by Earth in 1986, and although the famous comet won't be entering our solar system again until 2061, its remnants appear in our skies each year.

When the Moon enters the Earth's darkest shadow it nearly disappears in the sky - but a trick of the light paints it a deep red hue.

Mariners land Japanese left-hander Kikuchi
Kikuchi is a 27-year old left-handed starting pitcher from the Japanese Nippon League where he plays for the Seibu Lions. If they decline to do so, Kikuchi either can trigger a $13 million option for the 2022 season or elect free agency.

"Unfortunately, the almost full moon will block out many of the meteors this year, but the Geminids are so bright and numerous that it could still be a good show", the website says.

This will make it possible for the human eye to appreciate the glory of Eta Aquarids' dazzling show. Unfortunately, it will be visible only from northeast Asia and the North Pacific, as it will happen around 8:42 p.m. ET in the United States. "Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight".

The next big event occurs in May, when a rare blue moon will be visible on May 18.

"The extra full moon of the season is known as a blue moon", the website says. But, as the wise say, "never say never". The last trek took place in 2016, and for the first time in 10 years, the small planet was visible from Earth.

A striking celestial phenomenon as Mercury makes the transit across the Sun.

You may have to stay up late or set an early alarm if you want to see it though: the eclipse is set to begin around 4.41am on the morning of 21 January, and won't peak until roughly 5.16am. It will appear as a black dot across the the face of the sun, and stargazers will be able to see it with the help of a telescope and solar filters.

During a solar eclipse, the moon blocks the sun, leaving only its outer edges visible from earth.

2019 closes on a high note with a rare and glorious "ring of fire". The eclipse will begin right at dawn and pass over the Arabian Peninsula and arc over areas of South Asia.

The "blood" part of the name comes from the total lunar eclipse that will coincide with the supermoon.

For all those Jim Carreys out there, who are looking for their Bruce Almighty moments, there will be three supermoons - on January 21, February 19 and March 21.
