Rayudu banned from bowling in global cricket

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday suspended Ambati Rayudu from bowling in international cricket, after the player failed to test his suspect action within the stipulated period of 14 days. According to the ICC, Rayudu, a part-time offspinner, will remain suspended from bowling until he is tested and "can demonstrate he is able to bowl with a legal action".

The part-time spinner's action was flagged by match officials, citing concerns over its legality, a day after the first one-day global against Australia in Sydney on January 12.

Rayudu has not been used as a bowler during the ODI series against the Black Caps, which India lead 3-0. With Hardik Pandya suspended, he might be tempted to draft Vijay Shankar in the squad purely as a bowling all-rounder.

His suspension is in accordance with clause 4.2 of the ICC regulations, which deals with the legality of bowling actions.

Rayudu bowled two overs during India's 34-run defeat as Virat Kohli was forced to use the 33-year-old's services after Mohammed Shami walked off the field with a niggle. He had a very lean patch with the bat in Australia despite India winning the series 2-1. However, his action came under the scanner and was reported after the match.

The ICC also announced that Rayudu may however continue bowling in domestic cricket without being tested. He is now the part of the Indian squad taking on New Zealand in the ongoing three-match series.
