Regional Airbag Problem Behind Ford Recall News Centre News

Ford is recalling 953,000 vehicles worldwide, 782,384 in the United States and 149,652 in Canada.

The Takata recall is one of the largest in US history.

The devices use ammonium nitrate to inflate the airbag in the event of a crash.

While airbags are designed to explode and inflate on impact, the Takata bags are exploding with too much force, damaging a metal canister inside the bag and creating risky shrapnel.

Ford says it's not aware of any injuries from vehicles included in this most recent recall.

Ford said dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator or module at no cost to the customer.

In fact, she appeared to be in control up a break midway through the third set having battled back after dropping the first. Later Friday Canadian Bianca Andreescu, ranked 152nd, will face sixth-seeded American Venus Williams in the quarterfinals.

Takata recalls are being phased in through 2020. Last September, Honda and Acura recalled 1.4 million vehicles for the issue and in December, Toyota and Lexus recalled 65,000 vehicles. The same information will be available soon at NHTSA's website.

The cause of this worldwide recall are Takata passenger airbags, which have injured at least 23 people with explosions and shrapnel. The faulty inflators are responsible for 15 confirmed deaths in the US, federal investigators said in a report last month. This is the fourth planned expansion of vehicles included in the Takata inflator recalls, described in the National Highway Traffic Administration's Takata coordinated remedy order.

The recalls forced Takata of Japan to seek bankruptcy protection and sell most of its assets to pay for the fixes.

Safety advocates said the completion rate should be far higher given the danger associated with the inflators.

The inflators grow more risky as they get older because ammonium nitrate deteriorates due to high humidity and cycles from hot temperatures to cold.
