Rescuers diverted to second Brazilian dam in danger of collapse

Tragic déjà vu Vale’s dam break leaves dozens of Brazilians under mud

Rescue teams searching for 300 missing people after the collapse on Friday say the chances of finding survivors are "very low".

Firefighters said they immediately began evacuating communities near the dam after the latest threat. "Within a little while, more mud will fall". - AFP The stuck cow had to be left behind.

"How can they let this happen again?"

The evacuations come after at least 34 people died when a dam burst on Friday.

"I only heard shouting, people saying to get out. I had to run with my family to get to higher ground, but there was no siren", she said, adding that a cousin was still unaccounted for.

That dam was also administrated by Vale, along with Australian mining company BHP Billiton.

The military is responding to an order from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who offered the aid to his close ally, new Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Sonia Fatima da Silva was among the scores in the city of Brumadinho trying to get information about their relatives. "My hope is that they be honest". The flow of waste reached the nearby community of Vila Ferteco and an occupied Vale administrative office.

Some residents barely escaped with their lives. "It was a tremendous noise", said a tearful Simone Pedrosa, from the neighbourhood of Parque Cachoeira, 5 miles (8 kilometres) from where the dam collapsed. "Find the highest point in the city", the warning said.

"If we had gone down the other direction, we would have died", she said.
"It's a trauma. I'll never forget".

"We will continue to act under the assumption that people can be rescued alive until we have recovered the last body", said Pedro Ihara, a spokesman for the country's fire department.

Vale chief executive officer Fabio Schvartsman apologised without taking responsibility in an television interview on Saturday.

"Right now, I can only hope for a miracle".

"Time is passing", she said. "It's been 24 hours already ..."

"What just happened just now is beyond anything that I could imagine", he said.

The carpet of mining waste has also raised fears of widespread environmental contamination and degradation.

But a United Nations report found that the waste from a similar disaster in 2015 "contained high levels of toxic heavy metals".

Brazilian authorities separately have frozen 11 billion reais - around $3 billion - in Vale assets in anticipation of compensation it will likely have to fork out.

Sen. Renan Calheiros called for Vale's board of directors to step down and Attorney General Raquel Dodge told reporters that Vale executives could be held responsible.

Vale started out in Minas Gerais - a rich state for mining, as its name declares in Portuguese - in 1942 as a state-owned company called Companhia Vale do Rio Doce.

The accident recalls a similar disaster in 2015, when another mining dam broke in the same state of Minas Gerais, killing 19 people. There are still 305 people missing as a torrent of water and mud slammed into Brumadinho, in southeastern Brazil.

After overflowing a second dam, the muddy mass flowed down towards Brumadinho before smashing through vegetation and farmland, destroying houses and engulfing tractors and roads in its path. Conservation groups in the area alleged that the approval was unlawful. That stood in contrast to the first two days of the disaster, when helicopters whisked people out of the mud.

Employees were working with volunteers to rescue and identify victims, the company said.

"All the warnings have been given. We are repeating history with this tragedy", she told The Associated Press.
