Senator Rand Paul wins damages after neighbour attack

A jury in Bowling Green, Kentucky, deliberated less than two hours before delivering the award to the Republican lawmaker who had been attacked while doing yard work at his Kentucky home.

WBKO's Kelly Dean tweeted that the jury awarded Paul $582,834.82 in medical damages, pain and suffering and punitive damages.

Boucher's lawyer said they will appeal. "Paul would get a verdict in his favor", Baker said.

U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) speaks to reporters outside of attending a closed-door briefing, on the death of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi, by Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director Gina Haspel at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S., December 4, 2018.

Paul at the time said he thought Boucher should've faced a longer sentence for the attack, which kept Paul off Capitol Hill for almost two weeks.

Boucher, a retired anesthesiologist, said the attack was sparked because he was agitated about piles of brush on Paul's property.

It's not that we didn't (stay humble) but you have to start strong, you have to be aggressive because they were in the first half. "For the first goal we played our way into trouble". "The reaction was good, we didn't lose, but we dropped two points we could have won".

Paul watched a few feet away and showed no outward emotion as Boucher testified Tuesday.

In the civil complaint, Paul sought an unspecified amount of compensatory and punitive damages from Boucher for "physical pain and mental suffering" resulting from Boucher's attack of Paul.

Baker said that Paul had resumed his "customary lifestyle" that included golf and a skiing vacation. Federal prosecutors have appealed, saying 21 months would have been appropriate.

For a moment, Paul said, he had a flashback to the 2017 shooting at a baseball field when members of Congress were practicing for a game.

The attack however was not politically motivated. He admitted to the attack and told authorities at the time he'd "had enough". Boucher chose to burn the pile to get rid of it, but accidentally burned himself.

"We can hold different views, whether it's politics, religion or day to day matters", Paul wrote on Twitter. "I hope that's the message from today".
