Student 20 dies after eating five-day-old leftover pasta

A student has died after eating leftover spaghetti that had been left out on his kitchen counter for five days.

His lifeless body was discovered 11 hours later by his "worried" parents who were concerned because he didn't get up for college.

A young student tragically died after eating a bowl of pasta that he had made nearly a week earlier.

The video, which was published on 21 January this year, discusses liver function and the bacteria - Bacillus Cereus.

"Typically, food poisoning just causes stomach inflammation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, it doesn't typically cause acute liver failure, and even worse, we can't find out which bacteria is causing the problem because culturing it would take days - days A.J. doesn't have because his liver is quickly shutting down", Bernard said.

The sudden death of a Belgium student who ate rotten pasta has made worldwide headlines after a USA professor used the case study to explain the impact of severe food poisoning on the human body.

In a YouTube clip, Dr. Bernard, a licensed provider based in the USA confirmed that the spoiled pasta had shut down the student's liver. While mild food poisoning is relatively common, it is very unusual for cases to escalate to this severity.

A United States professor, who identifies himself only as Bernard and claims to be a clinical adjunct professor from the University of IL, discussed AJ's case in one of his medical videos on his YouTube channel.

He said: "It is important to note that this is not a typical food poisoning case". He describes AJ as "an otherwise healthy 20-year-old man".

He added that AJ's case is uncommon, but not unheard of.

"Many people eat pasta, or any other form of noodles, that are leftover for a day or two and they're fine", he said.

When AJ died in 2008 the case was featured in the US Journal of Clinical Microbiology. It has been viewed more than 1.9 million times.

The leftover pasta which the student ate was tested by the National Reference Laboratory for Food-borne Outbreaks and it was revealed that it had life-threatening toxins. "If the food smells amusing, it's always better to be safe than sorry", he said.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) recommends that after cooking, food should be cooled as soon as soon as possible and refrigerated. It was then put in the fridge by his room mate for another three days.
