Trump says he received 'great letter' from NK leader

President Donald Trump said in a Cabinet meeting at the White House on Wednesday that a "big fat war in Asia" was narrowly avoided by the unprecedented U.S. Trump and North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un sat down for the first direct meeting of its kind last June and have begun to forge a historic deal to disable North Korea's nuclear weapons in exchange for peace and sanctions relief. "Look, it's been this way for 80 plus years", he said.

In his New Year speech, Kim called for the sanctions to be eased, saying that the North had declared "we would neither make and test nuclear weapons any longer nor use and proliferate them", and urged the USA to take "corresponding practical actions".

After describing the situation as having been "rough for a while" between the two countries, Trump showed the press a sheet of paper he claimed to be a letter from the North Korean leader, saying, "I'd frankly love to read it". "We'll set that up".

Kim said he was "always ready" to sit down with Trump to come to an agreement, but that Pyongyang "could be left with no choice" but to "seek a new way" if Washington reneges on its promises or "misjudges our patience". "A lot of good things are happening", he said, before adding that he is "not in any rush" as long as the North continues to refrain from nuclear and missile tests.

Still, Trump said last month that he expected a second summit in January or February.

The milestone event involved the asteroid Bennu, a relatively small space rock located about 70 million miles from Earth . The size of Bennu is historic because the asteroid barely has enough gravity to pull the spacecraft into a stable orbit.

"We really established a very good relationship", Trump said.

According to the Yonhap News Agency, Kim also renewed his calls for a complete end to joint military drills between South Korea and the United States and demanded that no foreign military strategic assets be brought onto the Korean Peninsula, saying that they are a "source" of tensions in the region.

The US president also told reporters that he had never emphasized the speed at which Pyongyang would need to denuclearize.

"They really do want to do something".

The two leaders exchanged a series of letters - some made public - in the wake of Kim's offer early past year to meet Trump and resolve heightened tensions caused by the North's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile tests in 2017. Now, does that mean it's going to be done?
