United Kingdom counter-terrorism police investigate stabbings in Manchester

Man was arrested following the incident

A 25-year-old man suspected of stabbing three people in Manchester's Victoria train station has been detained under Britain's mental health act although a counter terrorism probe is still ongoing, Greater Manchester Police said on Tuesday.

Clack said it took "six or seven" officers to wrestle the attacker down, using a Taser and pepper spray.

The statement was released as armed police patrolled the city in the wake of the attack. The man's brother is believed to work as a security guard at Manchester airport. He said: "They just told me to go back inside".

"I thought what I need to do is jump onto the tracks because next thing he's going to do is turn around and stab me".

Neighbours have suggested the suspect is of Somali-origin and was thought to have lived in the Netherlands before moving to the United Kingdom around 10 to 15 years ago. Neighbours said the blue VW Jetta in which he drove away belonged to the brother that worked at Manchester airport.

Greater Manchester Police quickly declared the attack an act of terrorism.

"The investigation has moved at a very fast pace and detectives are increasingly confident that the man acted alone in the final stages of the attack". He was also heard screaming "long live the caliphate".

Their injuries are serious but not life-threatening, GMP said.

The incident took place around 9 pm local time, according to reporters at the scene. "The investigation will continue and will examine if anybody may have encouraged or assisted the man to commit the attack", they said in a statement posted Wednesday on Twitter.

Mr Clack said it looked like both the man in his 60s and the woman with him had been stabbed, but both were conscious and were walked to a waiting ambulance. The officer, a sergeant in his 30s, had been discharged.

During a press conference, the GMP chief constable, Ian Hopkins, said: "Last night we experienced a horrific attack on people out to simply enjoy the New Year's Eve celebrations in Manchester".

A man is in custody after allegedly shouting "Allah" and stabbing three people, including a transport police officer, at a United Kingdom train station overnight.

"I know that the events last night will have affected many people and caused concern".

"I just heard this most blood curdling scream and looked down the platform and saw he had a kitchen knife with a black handle with a good, 12-inch blade".

As Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn paid tribute to the emergency services, police said the incident was one of several "serious crime incidents" in the city centre overnight, with 15 arrests being made and a total of 120 incidents recorded since 7pm on Monday. The station is set to remain closed until after midnight.

Assistant Chief Constable Russ Jackson said yesterday: 'There is wide reporting in the press about what the attacker allegedly said during the incident and because of this we want to be clear, we are treating this as a terrorism investigation. In 2017, there were five terrorist attacks - four in London and one in Manchester.
