The NHS is frequently called upon to pick up the pieces from underfunded and means-tested social care, and so the plan's exclusive focus on the health service makes little economic sense, its critics allege. When he visited Pilgrim Hospital in my constituency, he saw that this is not exclusively about money, because a huge chunk of the challenge that the NHS faces is about the workforce.

The publication of the plan follows the announcement previous year that the NHS would receive £20.5 billion extra by 2023-24.

Health Secretary, Matt Hancock MP, who visited Pilgrim Hospital in Boston at Matt's invitation last October, replied: "My hon. When we put £20 billion into a public service, of course we will need more people to deliver it".

"For community pharmacy to make a real contribution to this plan we will need to see transformative change in the sector, shifting our funding from a focus on the dispensing of medicines to patient care and freeing up pharmacists' time to offer more clinical services to patients", he said.

Dr Johnson said: "As an NHS doctor myself, I know how important our health service is to our communities".

The plan is based on a new focus on prevention - keeping people out of hospital by improving their health and investing £4.5 billion in primary and community care, supporting Global Positioning System, health visitors and community nurses.

Rajasthan: Baby split in half, head left in womb during delivery
A nurse at a government hospital in India is said to have "decapitated a baby while pulling too hard during a difficult birth". The man in charge of the heath centre in Ramgargh, Dr Nikhil Sharma, said he wasn't present at the time of the incident.

Mark Lyonette, chief executive of the National Pharmacy Association, said the plan "probably represents the start, rather than the finish, of discussions about NHS service provision in the period ahead".

DORSET'S Health watchdog has raised concerns about the ability of the government to push through its long term plan for the NHS, which was announced yesterday.

Niall Dickson, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, was cautious about the plan as a whole, saying that while it "looks set to promise a host of improvements", politicians must "be honest about the trade-offs that will be required and that we are realistic about what can be achieved given the ever increasing demands of an ageing population".

"A key aspiration of the plan is to keep people out of hospital for as long as possible".

We also support the improvement around land usage, which is particularly relevant to Kajima Partnerships through our work with South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust (SWLSTG) which through its estate modernisation programme is using surplus land receipts to deliver two new mental health hospitals to replace the original and now dilapidated facilities, opened in the 1840s.

"Our NHS is the backbone of our country, and I am delighted that the government is building on this with additional funding. One of our first and foremost responses to this challenge must be to modernise the mental health estate - a task that is long overdue and a scenario that is absolutely achievable before the NHS celebrates its 80th birthday".
